I have a PS3 which I use for BluRay as well as the usual other goodies like BBC iPlayer and games for the grandchildren.

Thing is the picture quality is not that brilliant. Definition seems fine (HDMI of course) but is very grainy.

Any other comments on PS3 BR quality?

This is only a problem on BR.

It's not typical at all, PS3's normally compare very well in picture quality to even players that cost more than the console. Remember all BR's are not equal in quality some even have grain deliberetely added to give a filmic effect.

the blu-ray picture should be rock solid and superb

it might be the connectiion/settings

for bestresults, connect with an HDMI cable, and then check the video settings

I borrowed my brothers PS3 to see what bluray was like, I wasn't that impressed  I since bought an LG BD370 and it seems alot more vivid

Excellent on mine.

What movies are we talking about, some have been very poor transfers.

Transformers, Dark Knight, Casino Royale, Q of Solace & Kingdom of Heaven for me are awesome quality.

Closeup viewing of HD images will often look grainy compared to looking at dvd .
Grain is a normal part of the film and movies where grain has been completely removed often look soft at normal viewing distance.

The PS3 is an excellent Bluray player . I swapped mine for a multiregion Panasonic player which is equally as good although it does give better results when upscaling dvd's.

Some people may not like the naturally grainy look of many films on Bluray but for normal viewing the grain should not be noticeable.

Bluray gets closer than ever to the real look of film and you would not watch a film from just a few feet away in a cinema otherwise those images would look a bit cack too

I'd use a film like 2001 for a reference of quality - fantastic transfer and very clean scenes. I love the output from the PS3 on my TV.

I agree with the others here, it could be a grainy movie. Try and rent Angels and Demons that has a stunning transfer.

Check your TV settings too. Having sharpness set too high or using 'dynamic' picture settings can really exaggerate any film grain.

So does VHS If your DVD looks better than Bluray then throw the PS3 in the bin and get a 'proper' BD player

PS3, jack of all trades and master of none
If you want a good BD player then don't use a games console

Have you ever used a PS3.

Its Bluray pictures are first rate and only price has taken away its status as the Bluray player to beat.

Its HD pix were certainly no worse than either the Sony I tried or the Panasonic I have

If you read the other posts you'll see I have
I'm not saying there are crap, just that they arn't as good as a proper stand alone unit. And given the fact that the early PS3's can't output bitstream sound a stand alone is the better option IMHO

If you wanted a good camera you would buy one, not a mobile phone

The PS3 is a 4-star BR player, it should look great.

Send it back is all that can really be advised.

I'm quite sure my 40GB (phat) PS3 outputs Bitstream, in fact, I have that option setup. Also the picture quality from Blu-ray, and upscale, is top-notch.

My mobile takes a stunning picture and is an excellent MP3s player. It plays games and has a torch on it to.

As for the PS3 being a master of none; I'd disagree. It's a great media system.

Wow, I bet you're proud of yourself for being such a geek, aren't ya...

Just to add; who even bothers with HD audio. The average size living room is way too small to get the full advantage. My SD DD/DTS sounds awesome in my living room.

That it does, some say its sound quality is the same too but a proper AV amp doing the decoding has the edge.

The PS3 had an OTA update early in 2008 to enable full support for all audio formats even DTSHD-MA.

Obviously the HD formats are only available via the HDMI output

Unless your PS3 is connected to an HD audio capable amp you will not see any reference to HD audio formats anywhere onscreen as the PS3 (and standalones) will default to regular DD or DTS soundtracks which are often not even accessible from the disc menu - as seen on the new Star Trek movie Bluray

I have a 37" HDTV with a 600w 5.1 DD/DTS sound system. It's most adequate and fills the room (if not the whole house, including neighbours') with top quality sound.

My games machine (as you call it) is awesome. It's a master of most trades.

Amazing quality on my PS3, wouldn't have it any other way. Play around with the settings on your PS3 like RGB or whatever it is and super white etc as well the settings on your TV.

It should not be grainy at all.
