I have a satellite laptop. To save space on the hard drive, i usually save all work to a disk on the D drive.

However, it has disappeared.

Whenever i insert a disk it makes a noise like its about to start, but then nothing. The lights flash on the tray too.

When i look in My Computer, the disk drive aint there.

Help.

Yes and with a lot more info as to the kit.

It sounds like it's knackered (hope backups were done) though it's impossible to be sure with the info given.

So is your D: drive a cd writer ? If so buy a cheap usb one and use that assuming it's just the drive that has failed

See if it reappears if you start the machine in safe mode.
To do this restart the machine and keep tapping the f8 key.
Select safe mode when the prompt appears, then after Windows loads look in "My Computer" and see if has reappeared.
This happened to me a few months ago and I had to reload the machine using the recovery disk after saving my files to a USB key to restore normal operation.

It could be software rather than hardware related. See if it reappears if you start the machine in safe mode.
