There was another king of voiceovers prior to Peter Dickson -

Patrick Allen.

I think Peter Dickson copies his style. Their voices are similar.

Wikipedia confirms this:

"In 2005, Allen became the voice of the British television channel films.

Since his death, the E4 voice-overs have continued with Peter Dickson imitating Allen's style. Dickson also recreated Allen's more serious style for a mock car commercial in an episode of Ashes to Ashes

Although he can be often heard using a variety of accents and voices, Peter's most well-known booming vocal style is similar to the late Patrick Allen, and following Allen's death in 2006 he took over as the voice of TV channel E4."

You can hear Patrick Allen's voice on the classic pop tune Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood:

He does the public announcement voice. You can hear his voice at the 4 mins 12 seconds mark. When he used to do tv adverts and tv links he spoke with a more exaggerated voice. Peter Dickson continues the style Allen created.

He sounded like Ronald Reagan...and then I realised I had gone to 5.12 by accident!

I've just read this posting and completely agree with your comments.
Peter Dickson is typical of current voice-over 'artists'. NO originality and quite monotonous in their delivery. An example of this is the Money Supermarket adverts.
It only goes to prove that Patrick Allen set a trend that looks unlikely to be surpassed; plus he was a stalwart of British television of the 60's and 70's and several British films.

Dannii Minogue had him doing her voicemail message when she was on the show 😂

Another example of how influenced by Patrick Allen Peter Dickson is can be seen in the old intros he used to do for Reeves and Mortimer such as here:

But of course, he has become far more exaggerated over time.
