You are absolutely right . I deliberately didn't touch on the grammar aspect

I went to a grammar school in South Wales and had a very old fashioned, pedantic English teacher who taught us excellent grammar .
She often used to have us stand up and tell a joke inperfect English
" There was this man .."
" What man ?"

I recall her asking one girl why her spoken English was so poor when her written English was so good , the reply was;
"They do make fun of you if you do talk proper where I do come from "
That says much I think .
