Why would you expect it to play CD's it's a DVD player.

Even a standalone DVD player won't play CD's.

Get a freeware programme called convertXtoDVD and convert your CD's.

no, it doesn't say in the manual - god i think its crap it can't play cds as all the other dvds in the house plays them.

its got a built in hard drive/usb port (whatever the heck that is) so she'll have to play music on it that way.

Excuse me? 98% of the stand alone DVD players now accept CDs [Audio CDs]. I've also got a TV/DVD combination that plays audio CDs, although, the make of mine is Phillips.

No offence, but I can only imagine that you've been unlucky enough to have bought a crappy version of a combination that should play DVDs and CDs. Seeing the rest of your post, how does this have a built in TV? A usb port is used to stick a flash drive into if you've placed a video file on it that you've downloaded from the Internet [providing it's DivX/XviD]. A hard drive is used to store what you've recorded from the TV.

I have never in my life owned a DVD player that doesn't play cd's. I thought that was the norm?

might not play a mp3 CD - but should definitely play a normal wav file cd

although i can never understand why anyone would bother running a tv screen to play a music cd, especially when the sound quality will be worse than through a normal hi-fi etc

LOL at post 3!

You have to love the level of technical knowledge on this forum....

Many, MANY hifis sold these days are tiny, crappy units with tinny speakers... because that's what's trendy.

In which case, many DVD/TV combos could well be better quality..

its only for a kids bedroom so sound isn't top priority. The tv has a usb port so i've just had a go at plugging he rmp3 in and that works fine through the tv so maybe that's why its not set to play cds?

the picture quality's excellent its like hd.

It is the norm. Even bluray players will play CD's. DVD players and Bluray players don't sound as good as a good quality CD player though when used to play CD's.

Agree with that. The same is true of a dedicated hi-fi amp and speakers compared to playing music through an AV amp. I tend to play music programmes such as Jools Holland Later through the hi-fi rather than through the AV surround system even though the speakers are at the opposite end of the room to the TV.

My Mission CD player is pretty long in the tooth though so I have my not so old HDD/DVDR and brand new Blureray player hooked up to my hi-fi amp as well to be able to play these new-fangled CD audio formats such as MP3.

More nonsense.

Digital is digital. If it reads the discs, it will play them back.

DVD and Bluray will play a CD just fine.

This nothing to do with your source and everything to do with the power and tone of the amp and speakers.

Hifi amps and speakers are designed for greater frequency range (since when did anyone use subs for hifi?)

Asp,
I know this will sound utterly simplistic, but I was on the verge of returning one of these types of TV's because it wouldnt play any discs, When my wife suggested inserting the DVD, CD the other way round, IE with the label facing backwards.
Sounds rediculous I know but it was the answer.
(cue much red facedness)
Sorry if I am insulting your intelligence.
