I just turned 16 and I have similair tastes, and friends who think the saviours of music are N-Dubz and Lil' Wayne and Black Eyed Peas.

I've highlighted my favourites on the list

Love your choices of music, it's awesome and very similar to my tastes - and I'm 21.

I remember when George Harrison died I was in a youth club a few days afterwards and we were talking about news that had happened that week, and I mentioned that GH had died, and one kid said - "Who's George Harrison?". I couldn't believe that someone didn't know who he was, and after I explained he was in the Beatles - he said never heard of them. I couldn't believe it.

So now, when I go places and DJ and stuff I make it part of my mission to educate people in good music and mix in a lot of old school bands like The Beatles, Queen, The Stones, The Kinks etc as well as playing the latest track by Lady GaGa or something and so far get a lot of positive comments.

My advice is, don't listen to anyone who says certain bands are crap, it's down to personal choice, and if you believe a certain band are awesome, then let others know about, that's how music from the 60's has lasted so long, because it is truely and utterly great. Can you realistically see people in nearly 50 years time, waving zimmerframes about still listening to N-Dubz? I think not.

hmmm.... I disagree with sentiments like this. I know this is an unpopular opinion on here.

Anyway, OP you have what is known as good taste! And a good mixture of old and new, which is nice.

I remember being 15 and trying to convert my friends to Steely Dan, which was a bit of a lost cause. Having said that, most of them could dig Pink Floyd and the Beatles.

Well considering as I have all those in bold on my iPod I would say you have very good taste. Most of them are classic acts and will always be remembered as such. Unlike the vast majority of the chart acts at present.

For a 15 year old to be listening to Bowie, Kinks, Beatles etc. in today's 'broken Britain' is nothing short of a miracle.

Well done. I also recommend a band called the Zombies who were around in the 60s and some of their best stuff is up there with Beatles/Beach Boys.

”

I remember when I was 15, about 14 years ago, a lot of people were into The Beatles.

That said, a lot of the Britpop bands of the time, especially Oasis, turned people onto the Fab Four.

Tell the people in school that they need to get some musical therapy! I was quite fortunate that I had friends at school that were also fans of the music I liked. Interestingly I had a friend at school that liked Maxwell's Silver Hammer and was one of very few Korn fans. However, I do remember having to justify being a Marc Bolan fan - quite a few of the friends that didn't quite get T. Rex became converts after Billy Elliot of course.

As has been said, taste is subjective and as has also been said, is it likely that people will be waving around

Some top tunes in there.

Keep your eyes and ears open to other artists as there are loads of great musical acts from over the years.

Explore different genres although you seem to have covered a few already.

Stay away from the Darkside (Cowell).

Kids tend to think that any songs that are more than about five years old are rubbish.

Tell your friends that those songs are classics because they've stood the test of time ... and that's the ultimate test of music.

You could also tell them that when they grow up and become a bit more mature they might grow to like older music too.

Most of the replies have said it in some form or another... music is for you to enjoy, not to make you fit in somewhere... be true to yourself and listen to what you enjoy, what has a positive effect on your unique brainwave activity.

Music is very much like food... most people assume that everything tastes the same to everyone, but why do some like the taste of broccoli?

Kids who think you have bad taste in music are just lost and desperate to find an identity... somewhere to belong. They want to fit in so forfeit there own opinions.

P.S: You actually have impeccable taste, a real ear for the art of song-writing.

I like 10 of the songs , 3 of which are very good.

A lot is passable but you named Billy Joel who in my opinion has committed many crimes against music and that song is particularly poo.

So sorry but i'd describe your music taste as a bit bad and in need of some experimentation.

And I'd completely disagree with this and say the fact that you have that song shows you have very good taste. Also one of my personal top ten songs from a great songwriter (IMO).

If you enjoy those songs or they have some meaning to you, thats all that should matter. Don't worry what others think of your taste or about fitting in, music is a very individual personal thing.

it reads like a playlist that Alan Partridge would put together, I hope you listen to some more contemporary and cutting edge music, it's not good to only like what your dad does when you are a teenager

For a 15-year old that's a pretty good selection. Your friends suck.

I am guessing cutting edge is the likes of Lady GaGa, Saturdays, Arctic Monkeys, I suppose?

Maybe if you understood REAL music the likes of which are contained in that list maybe, just maybe you'd learn a few things about music.

Oi, the Monkeys are amazing! Fluorescent Adolescent and I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor are TUUUUNNNEEES!

And Gaga's okay. I mean her album was good. Every song could have been a single.

But The Saturdays are horrific. And definitely NOT cutting edge!

But I do prefer all the older music, I will admit.

I'd love to know what's more cutting edge than the Beatles, Kinks and Stones.

Do continue...

I'd say his taste is fairly mainstream but that doesn't mean bad. Most of the songs in his list actually have something called a "melody", which used to be quite important in music and songwriting. By experimentation, do you mean music that doesn't have a melody and relies on discordant noises and people screaming instead of singing?

its very commercial the lyrics are crude more akin to a two ronnies song sketch than indie or cutting edge but in an age were uber commercial realy simple lyrics and composition is king it does stand out a fair bit .
nothing fantastic about it compared to the beatles or stones stuff sorry

I would have thought that Alan Partridge was more Abba and Europe, than those artistes mentioned in the OP.

Please enlighten us to what is 'cutting edge', in your opinion.
