to 7600 or not to 7600, that is the question
lalaland
20-03-2004
I am currently on a Three contract (5 months sentence left) and am unfortunate enough to have an Nec e606.

I don't mind it sometimes, there are some semi decent features such as the phone book, but it lacks bluetooth (doesn't connect to anything handsfree wise) and the battery dies after 30 seconds talk or 2 minutes standby (well, maybe slightly longer) etc. so I want a different handset.

My initial thought was to get a 2g handset and use that, but Three now look for people doing this and take action, so I won't bother.

I am now turning my attention to the 7600. It seems fair priced at £150 pay as you go on Three and the stand by is nice too. The handset does support bluetooth and although it's large, it's less bulky than my current brick.

Any got any advice, thoughts or more importantly still any experience on the 7600 as is it worth me spending £150 and chucking my e606 in a drawer somewhere to be forgotten?

(in closing I would like to say that I will never buy or use another NEC phone again in my life, the e606 sucks the big one and doesn't do half the stuff it was first claimed to do.)

You can find a preview of this phone here:

Its a strange looking phone for sure!

As for 3 I think their pay as you go option is rather poor in that you must use all your credit in 1 month or loose it Maybe you are going to simply put your contract card in the phone for the remaining 5 months. Im not sure if 3 do this but they may lock their phones to certain tarrifs like vodafone do. Its a remote possibilty but one you should check out first ie try before you buy if possible.

Personally I would leave 3 when your contracts up and go with another 3G provider as most will have operational networks and Orange may even officially do Orange Value Promise on 3's tarrifs by then (they do it on an unofficial baisis at them moment for certain customers)?!

Yep, but surely better than anything wearing an NEC badge.

I can unlock this phone on my PC using the software that I have, so I am intending to use the remainder of my 5 month sentence in the 7600 instead of the e606 insult.

I am not with Three for the 3G (daft as it sounds), just the inclusive all network minutes. It's the best plan I've found so far.

My bill used to be around £80 - $100 per month, but since shifting to Three it's hardly ever above £30 a month due to their inclusive minutes. The only draw back is using an NEC phone (they're sh*t). The network coverage has improved and I never bother with video calls or Three's extremely crap walled garden of a download system.

My idea is to use the soon to be unlocked 7600 handset with my existing Three contract sim and to enjoy a longer battery life with the decent extra minutes that no other network seems to want to offer at the moment.

I think I will give it a try....

Bought one and it's early days yet, but so far moving from the NEC e606 to the Nokia 7600 was the best idea I've had in a long time!

At last a real working, not too ugly, functional (does what it says) phone on the Three network.

I will report back later...

Ok, give me a couple of days to give it some testing and also try it with my bluetooth kit (coming tomorrow) and then watch this space for a full Lalaland report on the Nokia 7600 on Three.

Ok, I've had the phone for a full week now and here's my mini review:

Moving from the Nec e606 to the Nokia 7600 was a great idea. I now have a battery life that last longer than a day and that doesn't require recharges or battery swaps just because I called a couple of people and sent a text message!

The battery life on the 7600 lasted 3 days happily without recharge during my first 3 days which is good to say I was playing with it a lot (new toy, must play ) and trying out it's features.

The camera on the 7600 is a lot better than the e606 on both photo and video and also seems to respond a lot quicker too. In other words, it's usable and the photos are recognisable too. The camera also seems to perform very well in low light conditions using it's night time setting. I tried this in a club, casino and in a field. All photos were fine and the e606 didn't even manage to get anything other than darkness.
The 7600 also has a handy camera button at the top of the phone too which can be used to take photos quickly instead of going through it's menus. This is very handy and means you get more chance to take a photo or video of something as it happens.

The 7600 fits nicely in to your pocket, unlike the e606 which looked like you were carrying a breaze block around.
I admit that the 7600 is still slightly bigger than some phones, but it does fit neatly in the palm of your hand and when in your pocket is almost not visible.
The weird shaping isn't to everyone's liking, but it's certainly grown on me and my mates.

The MP3 ringtones are fun but can sometimes be a little quiet. This is sorted by using some freeware software I found to increase the volume of the MP3 files and they are fine now.

The voice dial is excellent and there doesn't seem to be the 10 number limit imposed on it like some phones. This is very handy when being used with my Jabra BT200 headset as I can make a call while driving.

Bluetooth! Yes it's got it and yes it actually works. This is a nice addition for me as my e606 was meant to have this but it could only be used for transfering files and even then I never managed to get it working!
The 7600 has full Bluetooth and it works great. I have tried this with mates phones, sending files etc. and also with my new Bluetooth headset, the Jabra BT200 which I strongly recommend!

The software on the 7600 is also excellent. Unlike the e606 it doesn't seem to slow down, doesn't seem to crash and doesn't have that annoying feature of the signal dropping and no phone features being available while deleting text messages.

The 7600 has 28 meg of Ram for storage, which is excellent. It's so far holding many games, 7 videos, 6 MP3 files, my full phone book and about 25 voice dials and still has about 10.5 meg left.

Linking the 7600 to your PC is easy thanks to the Nokia PC suite and can be done via cable, IR or BT. I have happily synched it with my Outlook and it also seemed to update the time and date settings while on their too.

Another benefit of this phone is that it's not been 'Threealised'. In other words you can upload games and Java applications to the phone via your PC without having to buy them from Three's walled garden. This means that instead of paying 50p every so often for a license to play you can download free games from the net (keep it legal though) and then upload them to your phone. This is something that people have been trying for a long time with the other Three phones. (Take that Three! )
I currently have the Moto game, Bomberman and loads of others too which is a lot better than the e606's complete lack of games and requirement of pay per play at stupid recurring prices.

The 7600 as a phone (which is what it is) works well. The call quality is clear and it's actually quite comfortable to use, despite it's looks. The only thing that lets the calls down on this phone is the Three network.

My overall feeling is that when I bought the Nec e606 on Three I was stupid! It's a shoddy phone that's a pain in the arse to use. Only now that I have moved to the Nokia 7600 have I realised how nice it is to use a decent phone again. The software works, the phone has all it's advertised features and it's reliable.

My advice is if you have any other Three handset then sell it (or smash it) and get yourself to Carphonewharehouse now with £150 and buy the Nokia 7600 on Threepay NOW. Sell the Threepay simcard on Ebay for about £30 and enjoy your new phone. (they are selling more and more of these as people realise how much better they are) This is definately the best phone on the Three network at the moment.

The Nokia 7600 is also easily unlocked and can be used on any network, so if you want to make some cash then buy a few of them at £150 and sell them at £200 each as sim free. Also selling the sim cards at £30 each racks up your profit

In closing:

Nec e606 - 1/10. It was ok when I first got it as it did video calling which was fun for the first week or so.
Now it's useless. The software is crap, it doesn't work with any bluetooth headsets or carkits, it's unreliable and the battery life is less than useless. AVOID!

Nokia 7600 - 9/10. Probably the best phone I've ever owned (and I've had a few). Reliable, nice battery life, good software, nice features. It's looks different and is interesting while managing to keep ease of use and comfort for the user.
The only loss is the video calling which is what some people want on Three, but if like me you are just using 500 inclusive all network anytime voice minutes on normal calls then this phone is ideal.

I may sound 7600 mad, but it's just that I am in releaf as I have at last found a happy solution. I have kept my call allowance and also got a decent phone. This is something I never dreamed possible on the Three network!
And at the same time I have still kept my Three contract going, so if in the 5 months time when my 12 stretch is complete I get offered a decent upgrade IF* they get decent phones on their network then I can take that too.

* - Please note that NEC do NOT make decent phones. Just look at their PCs (such as Packard Bell) to see the shoddyness of all their products. If it's NEC it's not for me.

Any questions then post them here...

Nice choice. Good to see someone else that managed to think of a phone in a different shape, why should they all be the similar shape?

I can't remember at the moment, I will look it up when I get home.

All I did was a google search for a free MP3 volume increase (or similar wording) and there were a few to choose from.

have you bought a 7600?

Yeah, I've just bought one off Ebay for £143.00 which I thought was a pretty good price for such a heavily featured phone....Till I saw your post and checked the price of the Threepay 7600. I've just seen it going for £129.00 on a website!! GUTTED!! I'm amazed the phone is on sale so cheaply???? I mean I'm on the Orange network and would have to get it unlocked but that wouldnt cost much.

When i first got my phone it had two games of it, one of them being a puzzle, which i played on and was fine. Now they just seem to have vanished into thin air.
