The 1983 documentary ended on an upbeat note, announcing that Radio Luxembourg would 'stay ahead in the game', with plans for broadcasting on satellite.
Noel has never shown any emotion to his days at 208.

If you look at Tony Prince, Bob Stewart and Stuart Henry in Farewell FAB 20 then you see sentiment for a time past.

It was nice to see that again. We found Stephen Williams again in the early 80s and he went out to the Grand Duchy several times over the next few years. Noel E wasn't out there long, of course so he wouldnt probably be so sentimental about Luxembourg and the radio station.
The 1983 anniversary programme kicked off with my pre-recorded interview with Teddy J and then Noel broadcast live from Audio International's studios in London where we had a party with something like 40 ex-208 DJ's there.

It was a shame. I would have iked to hear more clips and less music and interviews with stars who once had a record played on Luxy.

A longer series would have been better, too. There were many eras to Luxy, and a show on each one would have been good.

I agree and others have said similar things. The script was poor and they didnt really do their research as they left so much of the 208 story untold.

We know when Radio Luxembourg left satellite (30/12/92) but when exactly did it start?

Was it always on Astra 1A? Which TV channel subcarrier did it use?

I only know one answer. On Astra 1, It used to be on the sub-carrier of Filmnet, the scrambled Dutch film channel, that was easy to unscramble. Not that I ever did that, of course.

I would have liked more on Bob Stewart and Stuart Henry in particular.

7.38/7.56 on x13 (which was Veronique) - I think from March 1991 but my notes from this time are filed away.

It had been on Eutelsat at 13 east before then.

Sorry Colin_London, I think ozsat is correct. My memory of Radio Luxembourg via Astra satellite, has faded.

My recollections of Luxy go back to "Opportunity Knocks", "Take Your Pick", "Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future" etc.
I remember an anniversary programme in the early 80s where Capital Radio provided the link from London.

This is the real story - I remember listening that night!

But for Stephen Williams not to remember the Steve Conway closedown song amazed me!

He would have remembered it, but it wasn't the song that was intended. Both 'At the end of the day', and 'Its time to say goodnight' were used as ending songs for Radio Luxembourg, but he (and we) were expecting to hear 'Its time to say goodnight'. I think that's what he meant when he said it was the 'wrong' song. Someone must have assumed that 'end of the day' was going to be used, rather than looking at the title requested.

Personally I wasn't a fan of the Steve Conway version of 'At the end of the day', and I don't think it lasted very long as a closing song.

I liked the Luxy tradition of using the same song to sign off in the early hours. However the best had to be Marian Montgomery / Maybe the Morning preceeded by Bob Stewart.
You can here closedown here at 5.17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icDdZg9qJDw

Yes that was a classic and used I think in the 1970's?

The mention of Luxembourg in the MW/LW thread made me think: instead of expanding their LW French service (thus restricting English to hours of darkness on MW), what if instead they had expanded their English service to all-day all-week on LW.

That level of influence throughout the fifties and sixties would have had an enormous impact on UK broadcasting, forcing the BBC to rethink its own radio service provision a lot sooner than 1967.

Come to think of it, that level of influence wouldn't have been permitted, would it?

You make an interesting case here and if it had happened that way then maybe the BBC would have reacted differently to the competition. But, you say that level of influence wouldnt have perhaps been permitted......but Radio Luxembourg had legal frequencies to broadcast then in MW and LW and probably could have used those frequencies as they saw fit.

The BBC radio was incredibly stubborn over pop music, which it considered to be a passing fad. The main radio audience was during the evening and that was collapsing due to commercial TV. I'm not sure an all day LW broadcast would have changed anything at the BBC. However, if Radio Luxembourg had gone into DJ pop mode with commercials in 1960 on LW they could have had the success of the 1970s in the 1960s. No immediate reason for having offshore stations. The BBC wouldn't have seen any need for Radio 1 which they only launched with the greatest of reluctance. It was only in the late 70s that a new favourable generation had reached management levels at the BBC. The first BBC Pop radio station launching in 1978 after european frequency re-allocation !
