Hello all, thought i had this sussed but... here I am again.

I've got an lcd tv, dvdr, fta sat box all with 2 scarts each. Moved them all onto a new shelf unit and *thought* I'd put it all back together ok but the difference since the move is if I have the tv and dvdr on, then switch on the fta box, the tv no longer auto-switches to scart1 channel.

I have scart from tv scart1 to fta box vcr scart
Fta box tv scart to av1(tv) dvdr scart

If I switch the scarts over on the fta box I can't record off the fta box on dvdr channel av2.

What have I done? I think the aerial leads are all ok so I'm wondering if I got something wrong with the scarts. Help please!

Connect the TV scarts of both the sat box and the dvdr to the Tv's scarts. If only AVi on the TV is RGB use that for which you want the bsest picture for. Connect the sat box vcr scart to the dvdr scart and select the vcr scart on the dvdr as the recording source

Sorry I was typing in a rush yesterday and forgot to mention the TV and DVDR are already hooked up via HDMI lead

If you connect the sat box tv scart to the dvdr vcr scart, turn the TV to the dvdr input. Press the dvdr source/AV button on the remote it might be marked source or a little TV with an arrow pointing in. Can you then see the sat box picture on the TV if not it's likely that the dvdr wont upscale an external input. If this is the case you need a scart cable as well as a hdmi from the dvdr to view signals input to it's vcr scart

Hi Graham, I'm not looking to upscale the sat picture. I'm just trying to get it back to this -
If I was watching freeview via the dvdr/freeview combo and then I switched on the sat box, the tv would auto-switch to Scart1 where the sat used to display, and if I selected AV2 on the dvdr I used to be able to record off the sat box. I've only ever used 2 scart cables along with the 1 hdmi. Sorry if I'm prob explaining myself too well.

OK. Try this.

Satellite box "TV" SCART --> DVDR AV2 SCART
DVD AV1 SCART --> TV AV1 SCART

You can still watch the DVDR via HDMI. When you switch on the satellite box it will signal to the DVDR to pass through AV2 to AV1 and on to the TV so you can watch satellite programmes.

And you can also record on DVD from satellite by selecting AV2 as previously.

I suspect the issue is that you have the SCART leads in all the wrong places

The "VCR" SCART on the satellite box is the wrong place to connect a TV. For one thing it doesn't have RGB video for the best quality picture. Secondly it may well not have the pin 8 switching signal that tells the TV the satellite box is on.

And of course recording via AV2 on the DVD won't work. You have the satellite box on AV1 !

Chris, I just tried that but the tv still doesn't auto switch to the sat box when I switch the sat box on. Also, now every time I press the EPG button on the dvdr/freeview remote the tv switches to scart1 channel to display the EPG. I'm confused lol!

Right.....

The reason for the suggested connection layout was to get RGB quality video onto the DVDR for recording. But looks like that may not work too well.

So in that case try....

Satellite "TV" SCART --> TV AV1 SCART
Satellite "VCR" SCART --> DVDR AV2 SCART

That may well be how you had it before. You won't get RGB quality video out of the VCR SCART on the satellite box which will affect the recording quality somewhat. But if you can live with that this connection scheme may solve the issues you have.

Otherwise you could end up spending hours faffing around in the menus of the various bits of kit trying to find a combination of SCART control settings that work.

Chris, ok we're 99% there
Have set up as you've shown and the tv does now auto-switch to scart1 when I switch the sat box on. And I can record the sat by using dvdr av2 channel. Only problem (but it really doesn't matter) is that av2 channel shows up blank on the tv so if I'm recording the sat while watching it I have to keep the tv on scart1 channel. But as I say that really doesn't matter too much. The box auto-switches and I can record off the sat so thanks for your advice and help Chris, much appreciated.

Just clarify something.

I assume when you say AV2 you are referring ONLY to the DVDR and not to switching the telly to AV2? I assume you keep the TV on HDMI when viewing the DVDR?

I would be surprised if the DVDR could not show what was on AV2 on the HDMI output. After all it has to digitise the signal to record it so should be perfectly capable of sending the resulting digital signal up the HDMI lead to the TV.

Then again stranger things have been known to happen.

Hi Chris, yes thats correct.

I switch the dvdr on, then the tv which switches on to the HMDI channel. Soon as I switch the sat box on the tv switches to scart1 channel which is what I was trying to achieve.

To record off the sat box I change only the dvdr input to AV2. The tv remains on scart1 while the dvdr records off the sat box. Its just slightly disconcerting because if I then change the tv input to HDMI I just get a grey screen. Now I know just to leave it on the scart channel while its recording.

As I say its not a problem just strange.
