I think that's kind of unfair to be honest. The contestants are somewhat restricted in what they want to do - they have to stick to a certain song chosen by their mentor and a certain type of performance to fit the song and also please the viewers at home. I think you can only get away with taking big risks by being so OTT and out there if you are someone with all your own creative control.

Besides, the whole GaGa persona is very self-indulgent or diva-ish. Not exactly something that will win votes from the public when you don't even had a record deal.

Diva-ish? Bizarre and borderline crazy, but diva-ish isn't the sort of thing that springs to mind when I think of GaGa.

Stefani Germanotta could have won X-Factor, but not Lady GaGa. Her clothes would have people screaming for Ofcom. She'd be called fake, a weirdo, and much more. And that's just her personality.

Her live performances wouldn't work on X-Factor because a lot of what GaGa does is performance art too, what with all the smashing of bottles on burning pianos, fireworks exploding from her breasts, and blood pouring out of her chest before miming being hanged.

Lady GaGa would be laughed and booed off stage.

Shows how much X Factor knows about current music.

I think Rachel's original style shows that on the X Factor being current does not work at all.
If someone like GaGa applied they'd be put in ballgowns and given a more traditional hairstyle that looks better against a wind machine.
That said, it's strange how after Alexandra spent most weeks doing ballads and wearing the long flowy dresses she was styled like a poundland GaGa when her solo stuff started!
It's like the X Factor and the music it produces outside of the tv show are aimed at two massively different audiences.

There was a Lady Gaga-esque contestant at a BGT audition I went to with a friend a couple of weeks ago (my friend's a contortionist but didn't get through). We heard her (though we couldn't see her during the audition) and she was quite good. She was told that she wasn't right for BGT but could audition for XF next year. The thing is, and I don't know if she was being serious, she told us she was 45. She didn't look it. 35 at a push but definitely not 45.

This, which is a shame. She had to change everything just to try and get people to like her. If you don't have long flowy hair, and wear a long flowy dress each week you won't get far.

Yes. Next year. It will be me. I am dying my hair bright pink and will audition in my underwear and heels. I'll be covered in head to toe in fake tan and strange make up, I will bring on semi naked dancers half way through my performance. There will be lions too, and rings of fire. A full on dance routine, with fire, and at the end, we will drop a massive sackful of glitter on the judges heads. And there will be fireworks.

Oh, I'm singing You Raise Me Up by Westlife. They'll join me on stage near the end, too.

I have often wondered about the audition process, I just think you will get singers that can actually sing ballads really well. The only slight different 2 singers that have appeared on the show are Rhydian, who funny enough has gone on to be pretty successful and Jamie "Afro" Archer, who was classed as nothing more than a pub singer by Louis, whilst bigging up Jedward as major talents FFS.

The thing is, how would someone like Florence and The Machine get on if they auditioned, (I personally think she sounds like a cat who has just had it's tail trod on whilst someone scrapes their nails on a blackboard at the same time) but she has been quite successful, so why would she be overlooked by the X Factor judges, when someone (probably Helen Keller) has heard something to give her a record deal.

I think a lot of acts in today's chart would be completely turned down at the first audition stage, but they have made it somehow.

I guess we will always have the popstar with a decent singing voice and the right look that will win, or even get through.
