Hi,

Isnt it strange that three of the fastest selling albums in this country, didnt have the best of ratings look

Susan Boyle - I Dreamed a DREAM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Dreamed_a_Dream_(album)

Cheryl Cole - 3 Words
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_Words

JLS - JLS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JLS_(album)

What matters now is if you have a BIGGER enough fan base, even if your album is trash people will still buy it

I never look at reviews or ratings> I also think people who believe in one person's opinion is stupid as well

I agree, they don't matter. Critiques and reviews are all one person's opinion, but people will want to form their own opinions.

I buy what I want to listen to... Considering I'm paying out my money and that I live in a democracy, I think I have the right to do so.

Yes very true

Unless its like overall ratings like on IMDB, that has never failed 4 me

I dont think boyle will get a #1 single in charts, simon just wanted cash flow!

Thousands of preordered albums

Does anyone really expect great albums from reality TV show contestants or presenters?

They're just Christmas presents for fans of the TV shows.

I'd be very surprised if any of these albums were being bought or listened to this time next year, let alone in five or ten years time.

Will Young?
Kelly Clarkson?
Girls Aloud?

Might not be your musical tastes... But they have made some great albums.

As long as you enjoy listening to them; that's all that really matters.

Like other people have said; I don't read reviews, not before I've got the album anyway. After I've heard it and have formed by own opinion, then I like to have a little look at certain reviews.
Of course it's all subjective, but you always get the odd reviewer who's blatantly trying to be quirky or controversial by giving something a worse review than it deserves.

EXACTLY! No one persons opinion (whether it is a top radio 1 dj, music critic from the NME or your gran!) is any more valid than anothers. Unless of course you find that a particular critic always seems to have the same taste as your own. By all means listen to other opinions, but never assume they are right!

I would read them but if i read a bad review but liked the artist or a single then i would buy the album regardless of whether a crtitic has said otherwise.

Why does that mean that ratings don't mean anything? In terms of intrinsic musical quality it probably still has some value. I think what you mean to say is that sales don't mean anything... I would still pay attention to ratings personally as what matters is my own enjoyment of it rather than how many other people have bought it. The real question is, after buying it, did they like it?

Yep, it all does come down to opinion but people who have already bought the album probably have a similar taste in music and there's a good chance that they like the same artists for the same reasons you do.

Cheryl Cole, Susan Boyle etc had massive build-ups to their singles/albums so no wonder they ended up doing so well.
