Everyone knows that there's a certain period when Neighbours was great. Essentially between the day Kylie Minogue joined the show as Charlene, and maybe even as late as the day Jim died in 1993 (which was great, by the way). Since then both Helen and Madge have passed away. Before then, we lost Scott & Charlene to pop careers, Mike to Hollywood, Harold to drowning (though he later returned!), Mrs Mangel to England, Des to drugs, Daphne to the world's most gut-wrenching car crash, Lucy Mk 3 to God know's where, Beth to Silverchair, Henry to Home & Away, Brad to terminal stupidity, Beverly to divorce, Jane to wish-I-knew-where, I mean this is the whole cast! I tune in occasionally now, but aside from Dr Kennedy, Harold and Lou and that woman priest it all seems to be teenagers now. I mean, they were always an important part of the show, but the older characters like Paul (oh yeah, he left because he went mad didn't he?) and Jim and Des were always better. A true 80s gem, this one, best forgotten Now. Then again the show did have a good period in the late 90's which was better than the 80's era for me.
I think this show has jumped the shark in the last few years which i believe began with the entrance of the scully family in early year 2000 which made me cringe. Neighbours was once one of the most popular shows on television nowadays it is thrashed by Home and Away. The plots are terrible (admittedly a good one comes along once in a while ) I only watch the show because there is nothing else on at that time. I find all the characters appalling - Joe is a terrible character he is so annoying and the way he always goes off his brain, Lyn is a busybody and she is so judgmental, Jack is an idiot can they please get an Australian actor, Connor is an idiot, Karl and Susan are NOT funny like the neighbours producers think they are, Harold surely should be leaving soon shouldnt he and the whole Hoyland family make me sick out now!!!.
I have always cared about neighbours but the last 4 years has been bolllocks.

Karl has said that he doesn't love Susan anymore to her face and they seem headed for a weepy breakup, I don't think thats comedy.

It's the new producer - she's trying to bring in SHOCK stories but neighbours should stay as it was - about small moments.

I agree. I watched from 1991 - 1998. the charactors have lost all their chemistry. Does anyone remember the ayres rock storyline? The cursed rock that travelled round the street. classic.

It has this really weird feeling about it these days, the cast seems much smaller than it was. The characters are actually getting very boring.

Could they not introduce another house to Ramsay Street's featured properties, there must be houses that old characters lived in before that are no longer used?

I think its total bullshit, it has gone mega cheesy like a big piece of cheese on toast with a lump of cheddar and a lump of wensleydale sitting next to it, not to forget a big load of cheese sauce over the top!

The music has been the same since the early 90s and does not add 'suspense' or 'excitement' to the show, it is always played at inappropriate points and just sounds stupid.

When Susan slipped on milk and smacked her head then lost her memory, well OMFG I absolutely p****d myself laughing. When my mother found out Susan had lost her memory she said 'oh look its Harold all over again' Shows how stupid it is when these storylines get repeated and drag on ........ and on ........ and on  ........... snore

For the last two weeks I have been watching Neighbours again and I think it is absolute f*****g s**t! Watching paint dry is more entertaining!

aussie soaps are so irritating.why do they always have young female characters with daft names like gypsy or angel or serendipity(PUR-LEESE!)?not to mention poor storylines and wooden acting.

It's not just restricted to Australian soaps. Hollyoaks makes Neighbours look like Shakespere

i still prefer the aussie soaps attidute of making up after a fight than our incessently dull shouting at each other and not caring about our neighbours attitude.

Well I'm not being funny but I don't care about most of my neighbours and am quite happy keeping my distance from them as most if them are horrid vile people or liars!

I guess soaps portray neighbours like this too!

I agree it isn't as good as it used to be. And it moves so quickly, you can miss a few weeks episodes and then just start watching again and not miss anything important. But Neighbours is light relief from the doom and gloom of our soaps.

I heard somewhere that the Beeb edit alot out of it because its not suitable for teatime viewing in their opinion. But Home and Away and Hollyoaks are on at a similar time and deal with more grown up stuff.

Here - did Des die in Neighbours

I was really young when Daphne died, although I can remember it slightly. I never knew Des took drugs - I take it he died then? Who took Jamie? And has Jamie been back in Neighbours yet?

Maybe it's just cause we're all older? I was about 11 when Scott and Charlene married, then there were the twins, evil Paul, Cody and family all incarnations of Lucy, Beth, Lou's daughter Lauren.. loads of great characters. Now I'm a fair bit older I can't get as involved as I used to and haven't seen it much of late at all (mainly from being at work - boo!).. so why are Karl and Susan spliting? If they managed to cope with Sarah, with Susan's memory probs, with having some really vile children (I have always hated Libby!) why can't they get through this?

I agree. Obviously I've no idea how old everyone is but certain things seem a lot better when you're younger. I remeber going to watch a show once which I thought was amazing but when I saw a video of it recently it was shocking. Neighbours is not much worse if at all than it used to be. I'm not saying its brilliant but it does know its limits and plays to them. Its meant to be taken tongue in cheek and not as seriously/critically as some people approach it.

Yep, Neighbours is light entertainment and should be appreciated as such. It's not addictive/manipulative (like EE); the comedy works because of the light-hearted approach (whereas in EE it is just contrived); the cast are reasonably attractive, and storylines are not dragged out for months and months.

I don't think it is any better or worse than it used to be either; nostalgia is a dangerous thing...

I suppose Joe Mangle could return to Ramsay St now Sky is in it. He did adopt her didn't he? Or they could bring Toby back and have a different actor playing him.

My favourite character was Julie Martin. She was such a stuck up bitch, remember when she fell off a roof and was killed during a murder mystery weekend???

I dunno what is going to happen with this weirdo who started watching the Hoylands in today's episode and nicked a family photo but it actually looks like something promising can rock the far too safe residents of Ramsay Street!
