I'm looking forward to iPlayer functionality on the Humax box but don't have the beta access. Please can those on the trial report back any thoughts, has it advanced from a short list of trial programmes?

No - just 8 or so shows yesterday.
Maybe it will be changing today with the "official beta launch" or whatever they are calling it....

Have I missed something? Do I need to plug my ethernet cable into the box today?

See http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s....php?t=1177080 in the Freesat forum section (includes posts by the BBCi tech team confirming amongst other things that the full roll out won't happen for a while, that it is for the Humax boxes only at the moment, and that there are no plans to widen the trial population beyond the current testers).

FWIW posts in relation to iPlayer should really be on the Freesat not the Freesat+ forum as the iPlayer service won't just be for Freesat+ users.

Works well, no configuration needed, just plugged in my ethernet cable and all worked peachy. Good stuff

Yes the MHEG app no longer recognises the 8397 (TEST) code.

Neither of those codes appear to work anymore.

Apart from the obvious issues, eg. bandwidth problems, how is the iplayer trial going?

Does it look solid?
Are there any showstoppers, ie. crashes?
Does it look and feel better than iplayer on a PC through the same TV ?
IMHO...
(42" plasma from 8 feet, with Acer Revo PC on the same screen, Virgin 10Mb connection & ethernet cable to router)
1) yes, but slow navigating around the UI.
2) no - one freeze, but "exit" button always quits instantly.
3) no
Picture quality is usually worse (than flashvhigh mode which is all I use on PC) with lots of "shimmering" effects on certain scenes (eg: opening credits of Merlin:S&M, and shimmering is not there on PC version).
It's not always that noticeable though... if you get engrossed in the show, then you don't notice.
I watched the whole of the "Perfect Creature" film the other day, and it was watchable.
But Life with a leopard walking through grasses fell apart into smeary lego-vision.

But it is much more convenient than firing up the PC....

So is a PS3 and a PS3 does seem better at rendering than a PC. Standard streams are (to my eyes) within the ballpark of broadcast SD (at the lower end but still quite acceptable). The higher quality streams(*) are significantly better than broadcast SD and sometimes, frankly, worthy of being labelled HD.

(*)To watch these on a PS3 you have to download them and rip them out of the original container so that process might be helping somehow and is certainly not convenient. A right royal PITA in fact

Hmph. Got distracted and didn't edit in time.

I wasn't actually trying to sound critical of Humax there - just making an observation. The PS3 quite likely has better upscalers built in and of course a more powerful CPU so it's probably not a fair comparison.

I'm sure you already know this but on a PS3, open this URL:

http://bbc.co.uk/iplayer/hd

You can (with sufficient bandwidth) play the HD iPlayer stuff on a PS3 with ease

Just tried that and plays the programmes in sd and with standard BBC 1,2,3 or 4 header clip. So it ent HD

That's my experience as well. I don't the PS3's version of Flash supports the HD stream yet. I live in hope though - it didn't support the SD version either until recently.

Code will be released to the general public early next week. Applies to Humax receivers only.

I have been watching the BBC iPlayer on the Nintendo Wii since it came onto that platform on November 17th. I have now started to watch it on my Humax HD Freesat box. I find the iPlayer easier to navigate on the Humax with its remote control compared to the games controller.
I was able use the HQ stream which seemed slightly better than the SD stream, No stutter on either although a 1.5mb connection is required for the HQ stream. It will be interesting to see if this holds up during the evening when the internet gets busy out here in the sticks

Just to confirm that it works OK out here in the sticks on a line doing 1800 Kbps (on a good day). I used 2 Solwise PL-85PE adaptors and was up and running in minutes. PQ on the SD setting is acceptable and on HD pretty good.

I must admit that I was one of those who didn't see what the point of iPlayer on the HDR was but now I've got it I think it's rather good - another string to the bow.

Really? That's odd. The iPlayer HD stream is 3.5Mb/s. I'm amazed if they've managed to cram it into 1.5Mb/s - is the Humax doing a huge read-ahead?

FYI:1.5mb/s would certainly not be enough. You could get a faster data rate out of an asthmatic pigeon
