Foxsat HDR HDMI via splitter (Neet) since upgrade
LeslieCauston

I have my Foxsat HDR HDMI output connected to a splitter from Neet. One output goes to my TV (TX-37LZD85), and the other to my AV (SA-BX500). This always worked perfectly until the latest software upgrade to the Foxsat. After that I got nothing on either TV nor AV.

I'd given up trying to get this working again until I read the thread about aspect ratio switching:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s....php?t=1160271

What I found was that by repeatedly pressing the V-Format button on the remote to cycle through all options from Original, back to original, the picture appeared on both TV and AV!! If I stop on any other format it doesn't work.

Things I tried:
(1) Factory reset of the Foxsat. This worked until I powered off and on again. The Humax boot screen displays, but no TV picture/sound.
(2) Connect Foxsat directly to TV and AV separately - works OK.
(3) Try Neet splitter on other HDMI - works OK.

Anybody any ideas what is happening here ?

When you say TV and AV do you mean the picture is showing through the TV tuner as well as AV output for HDMI?

.

One HDMI output from the splitter goes directly to one HDMI input on the TV. The other goes via the AV to another HDMI input on the TV. There is no TV Tuner involved, just the Foxsat HDMI ouput to the splitter.

Why?

Surely you only need ONE connection to the TV? I can't see any reason at all for you to have two. I'm assuming you have one via the AV system to get surround sound so why not just connect the Foxsat direct to the AV system then use the onward link to the TV? Thereby ditching the splitter and the second link to the TV.

I'm guessing that the OP may want to do this if only wanting to switch the amp on if there's a DD 2.0 or 5.1 HD prog showing, and leave the TV to handle all other progs/sound.

The better way to do this would be HDMI from HDR to TV, and Optical SPDIF out to the amp - unless, of course the amp doesn't have an optical/spdif in.

Would be a pretty useless amp without optical in.

Agreed.

And if the amp has HDMI I would bet a couple of pence it has some form of Digital Audio input in addition.

And if it were some cheap all in one "home theatre" system I very much doubt it would have HDMI in/out so sounds like it may be a "proper" AV system.

Correct, and it does have optical in. The AV is normally off, with passthrough from another unit (DMR-EX88) to the TV. Sometimes I just want to watch the Foxsat without the AV.

But all this misses the point. Does anybody know why the problem only started after the Humax software upgrade, and what might be causing it.

No, it's a strange one this.

No answer to why, but we seem to have 3 scenarios :-

1. Some people with no HDMI switching or Green/Black screens before the update, now appear to have a problem.

2. Some people with HDMI switching or Green/Black screens before the update, now appear to have the problem no longer.

3. Most people don't have a problem with these issues before or after the update.

Humax say the box conforms to the HDMI & HDCP specs and have worked with various major TV manufacturers to test the interaction. I doubt that this extends to testing with HDMI switch/splitter manufacturers.

Rgds.

My temptation is to say ditch the splitter altogether. It isn't really serving any useful purpose in this case.

If you only need occasional use of the surround sound from the Foxsat then connect the Foxsat direct to the TV via HDMI. Connect the Foxsat Digital Audio Out to a free Digital Audio In on the amp.

That would both solve the issue you have and neaten your wiring somewhat. I have never been a fan of making unnecessarily complex connections if there is a simple one available as an alternative. Which in this case there is.

Since there is an alternate means to feed sound to the AV amp there is no real need to feed HDMI to it with all the complications and potential for cock ups that entails.

You lose nothing at all feeding the amp via an optical lead in place of HDMI in terms of audio performance. But you gain from a simplified signal path with at least one less point of failure, two if you include the extra cable required from splitter output to TV as well as the splitter itself.

If you do simplify the wiring as suggested above then it becomes purely academic why the splitter and/or update behave the way they do.

OK. Thanks for all your advice. If anybody else has similar problems it might help, and if I get it working I'll let you know.

Just replaced the Neet splitter with an identical looking device from ClimaxDigital (both available from Amazon) - and it works I haven't done any controlled swap to see if the Neet splitter was causing the problem or something else had changed, but it all works as before now.
