Hi

I'm in the market for a Blu Ray player and have been thinking of the Philips BDP3000 which is being sold at various outlets for approx £100.

I've been told though that this is end of line kit, which I'm not bothered about, but also that it isn't futureproof, which of course I am. Discs to be released soon will not be able to be played on this machine???

Is this the case or is the statement wrong. If it is, can anyone recommend a good cheap player. We've been playing discs so far on my lads PS3, he has now taken his machine to his room (which means I can watch TV again!), but leaving the rest of the family with no means of playing the discs.

On another note, how would the Philips access the internet, is it wireless like the PS3 or would I need more kit. I have a wireless router.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Avoid this player...

The ethernet port is wired-only (you would need a separate wireless bridge) and only for BD Live (but you need to put a USB flash stick in the back as it doesn't have the memory to store the downloads! Doh!)... You can't stream off USB devices either.

Nice ports, shame about the functionality.

Blockbuster are doing the Samsung BD-P1580 with 3 Blu Rays free. for £129.99. I think it has built in wireless.

Thanks for your reply however the player I was checking out has this feature. I wonder if it was just a ruse to get me to spend more

quote from the products ad
"This stylish and versatile Blu-ray player brings you thrilling full-HD video with five times more detail than you've ever seen before. Naturally, Blu-ray playback gives you incredibly sharp picture quality, but with HDMI 1080p upscaling, your "old" existing DVDs will look amazing, too. What's more, with BD Live, you can go beyond the movies and explore exclusive bonus features online.

All of the most widely used video and audio media formats are supported, and there's DivX Ultra for enhanced playback of DivX media files.

The BDP 3000 is equipped with Dolby TrueHD for high fidelity 7.1 surround sound, so you'll have the superb sound to match the stunning pictures on the screen.

EasyLink enables you to control any connected HDMI devices through a single remote."

Very much media bumph.

The features it describes are pretty much standard on all BD players.

If you wanted to watch Divx movies, you'd need to burn them onto discs first.

The Dolby True HD is only really useful if you have high-end kit and a 7.1 AV amp...

Don't worry about BD-Live - its as important to Bluray as multiangle is to dvd.

Most companies do not even know what to use BD-Live for and the BD-Live discs I have offer insignificant bonuses when using my sons PS3.

My Panasonic Bluray player is not able to use BD-Live and there are no problems.

However - Philips stuff is usually shite so if you want a cheapie try the Curtis which is also hackable for multiregion on both Blu and dvd.

Less than £100 on ebay if you can't find a supermarket with it in stock

when we've hired blue-ray discs from Blockbuster video's before... we have been told by the staff there, that we may need to update our player via bd-live...... as lots of people have been unable to play the disc without it?????

The Blu Ray player manufacturer will provide the firmware update, not BD Live.

Thats the theory but I doubt you will find anyone who has actually come across the problem.

Basically there are 3 Bluray profiles and there was speculation that if you had an early profile player you would not be able to play recent discs.

However - the reality is that if you have a Profile 1 player then you cannot access the picture in picture bonus features.
If you have Profile 1.1 you cannot access BD-Live.

Some 1.1 players could be updated via disc to Profile 2 and the most useful option of internet connection would be the ability to update firmware in the player without needing a cd but I dont know of any that do that (unlike Toshiba HD DVD players which did ) and all the updates so far have been to sort out glitches related to specific discs.

Pioneer players had an issue with the Star Trek movies boxset as did the PS3 .

These compatibility glitches are no different to what happened with dvd in the early days.

I've got a Profile 1.1 player and I'm multiregional with more than a hundred discs from the US,Australia and the UK and
I've had no problems whatsoever with my Panny.

I think Play.com had this on a one day sale last week for £99.

Multiregion Magic will supply it for about £300 enabled to play Blu and dvd from any region

bluray 1.1 - picture in picture is good and necessary. i never use BD live, and dont think profile 2.0 matters, to be honest
