I have HD TV, HD Player... Now How Do I Get HD Sound?
I have a Sony HD TV and a Sony Blu-ray player.
I'm a novice, so could someone explain in layman's terms how I can now get HD audio from my systems? I understand that I need to purchased an AV receiver... Are there good entry-level ones and once I have one how do I connect? Does the sound come from my TV speakers or do I have to buy speakers as well? |

You will need an av receiver and a speaker package, either 5.1 or 7.1, the sound will be replayed via the systems speakers, not the TV.
Richer Sounds is a good place to start - receiver prices start from £230. Some examples... http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ky-txsr507-sil http://www.richersounds.com/product/.../sony-strdh800 http://www.richersounds.com/product/...no-avr1610-blk Speaker packages start from £80, but I would recommend something a little higher quality. http://www.richersounds.com/product/...yama-nsp270-si http://www.richersounds.com/product/...y-sksht528-blk http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ann-sfx5.1-blk http://www.richersounds.com/product/...kard-hkts7-blk Connecting is simple... Sony BD player HDMI out -> Receiver HDMI in Receiver HDMI out -> TV HDMI in AFAIK all the receivers mentioned have auto setup, all you have to do is plug the supplied microphone in and let the receiver do the rest. Once you get the equipment there are members here that would run through everything with you to get the best out of the system. |

Best advice goto Richer Sounds and ask for their advice as to a budget end 5.1 system. |

Both above are good replies. Just to clarify a point in grahamlthompson's reply...
There are some entry-level receivers with HDMI sockets that don't do HD audio decoding: The Sony STRDH500 (£139 at Richers) comes to mind. Although it has a couple of HDMI input sockets (and an output to the TV) they don't do anything more than act as a simple switch. It's tempting to think you've found a bargain, but they're really not what you want if you're after HD audio decoding. Stick to the amps in Deacon's list as your starting point and you won't go far wrong.

The others have given good advice but I would add that you don't necessarily need HD sound. DD and DTS 5.1 are pretty good and will be a massive improvement on your TV, you have to have a good set up to get much benefit from HD sound. It all depends on your budget.
