The facebook group 'Rage against the machine for xmas no.1' now has a staggering 453,000 members and is growing at an unbelievable rate! With general music sales down this year it's looking like they could actually suceed in their goal to ensure that the X factor single does not hit the number 1 spot this christmas. An article in the Sun newspaper today means media awareness is growing which will certainly help the cause! It seems a lot of people are sick of the X Factor!

Apparently the ragefactor site set up to support the campaign was set up by an A+R guy at Sony. The original Facebook group was started by normal people in fairness, but it's been piggybacked by the corporation.

I think Rage are under Cowell's label (syco, which is under the Sony Umbrella), so its a win win for him.

Although it would give me great joy to see RATM as Xmas no 1

Rage are with Epic, which is a subsidiary of Sony BMG. Syco is fairly small, with only a dozen or so acts signed to it. All of them are fairly cheesy - Il Divo, Westlife, Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, etc. Any rock band would be unlikely on Syco, let alone Rage Against the Machine.

The people behind the Facebook campaign having distanced themselves and removed all links to the Ragefactor site as a result. The Whois entry for the site lists it as registered by a Neil Ridley, also the name of a Sony executive.

It could all be coincidence, but it would involve undermining their own campaign.

They do have an extraordinary amount of members and have had much publicity from newspapers, magazines, and radio stations - even Radio 1.

But i actually wish that none of these campaigns existed and that all other artists just didn't bother releasing anything new in december and let x factor have their precious christmas no.1 all to themselves - then see how hysterical and excited they'd get over it.

OP seems to assume that the amount of members that this facebook group has = the amount of people who will be buying the song next week. Get real. To beat x factor they would probably need 99% of those 450,000+ members to buy the RATM song next week, which just isn't going to happen. In fact, i'd be amazed if half of them actually went along with it. Not only that - how do you know that all of them are even from the uk?

The Jeff Buckley group had a large number of members last year, but it didn't translate into sales. With an estimated 20 million watching this years x-factor final there is no chance of anyone else geting the x-mas number 1.

true.. i know people that have signed up just in passing and I doubt they'll be buying it. RATM fans won't buy it because they would already have the song, what's the point in buying it again. and i doubt their fans really pay attention to the charts or waging war on a pointless format like X Factor.

Real music fans would obviously have a problem with the show but are too content with their own accesability of music to join in with some tedious marketing campaign... yea x factor is annoying and peoples reliance on it annoys me but its not personally ruining music for me as an art because I know theres more ways to access music than tuning into itv on the weekend. its all pretty stupid really.

You would be insane to think that every single member of that Facebook group would actually BUY the single. I agree it is a very large number, but there is a significant difference from clicking the 'join' button and spending some of your cash to get a band to the Xmas no.1.

I've been invited to this ridiculous group around 10 times in the past 2 weeks, and I've rejected all of them simply because I have no intention of buying the song, and I'm sure alot of the members of the Facebook group do not intend to buy the song.

20 million viewers? I doubt it very much. The ratings have dropped significantly in recent weeks. I think it dropped something like 800,000 last week alone. 20 million viewers is a bit of a fantasy i think. And with the X Factor's raping of Michael Jackson failing to get to number 1 it seems like the interest is waning.

As hilarious as it would be, and as much as i'd love Rage to get Christmas number 1, it'll never happen. Radio stations are playing it at the moment (obviously omitting the "f*ck you i wont do what you tell me!" bit), so i believe that it'll be in the charts, but i can't see it being number 1.

I'm a member of that group, but i wont be buying it, purely because i've already got it, as will many of the other members of that group.

Not really, it's actually clean until the last minute or so, and the offending bit gets cut out on the radio anyway...
