Top piece of marketing by RATM though. Keep buying it, suckers!”

It would be a top piece of marketing if they had organised the campaign themselves yet they haven't.

i sort of agree with the first part, but your last sentence is a bit odd considering RATM didn't really have anything to do with the setting-up of the campaign (to the best of my knowledge, anyway).

I am confused why you picked such a song? surely there are better songs that more people would of related to than this.

*have.

i don't think it matters to most people (in my experience of the campaign anyway) what the song is, more that it represents something opposing the x factor strangle-hold on the xmas number one.

a lot of my facebook friends joined the group, having no idea who RATM are and never having heard the song. they're none the wiser now, but they feel they've done something "cool" and "controversial" by going against what they perceive to be the norm simply by joining, meanwhile having no intention of actually buying it. it's enough for them.

Fair enough!!

I watch the X Factor but never buy the single but i honestly dont see the big deal- its no worse than having Mr Blobby at no 1 or Westlife.

When is the x factor song released? If it's next week what is the point in downloading Rage Against The Machine now it just means less sales when they need it next week.

there's only one more sunday (ie. one more chart show) before xmas. that's the number one which will count.

as far as i know, the x factor winners' song is released at midnight. then they will both chart next sunday - the xmas chart.

So the facebook group has misteriously disapeared...

Well I've bought my copy from play.com, hope many others are doing the same. Can I ask if I buy another will it be counted?

No i dont think it does, maybe if you leave it a few days and then download it from a different place it might.

See, this is what the anti-RATM posters all seem to be saying "grrr it's old and irrelevant and scary! "

These are the same people that think movies, TV, music and art are only relevant if they were created yesterday. Let's take a rain check here - true art is ALWAYS relevant. RATM's message is as relevant today as ever, with the Top-40 charts dominated by music manufactured to make labels richer and artists poorer, and the biggest powers in the world involved in arguably immoral wars in Afghanisthan and Iraq. RATM will always be relevant while such corruption continues, whilst poor wee Joe or Olly (they're both the same person anyway, idiots) will remain relevant until next years X-Factor and Simon kicks them out on their arse.

In the words of Rage Against The Machine...WAKE UP!

Not really. It's more that championing 'real' music may have been better served if there was an example of something this millennium to put forward. The track itself still stands up as being representative of its time, but its use here centres completely around the protest lyrics and how well they can be used as a slogan.

By the way, RATM are about as alternative to corporate music as Pepsi is to Coca-Cola.

Sorry to burst you're buble but this would of worked better with a song that is current. A lot more people would of jumped on board as it is most people wont download it as they dont know the song.

to "take a rain check" is to decline an offer of something you may agree to at a later date

sure that was what you meant?

People don't know the song?! Just how stupid and narrow-minded are some people? Both their self-titled debut album and the follow-up Evil Empire went triple-platinum - that's success you earn, you don't buy it.

And celesti, just because RATM are signed to a major label does not make them corporate music. If it was corporate music, they'd be clean shaven, have short hair and be singing about how wonderful the world is. RATM have never once watered down the message of their music, not ever, and they never will. You would have a point if say a band like Metallica had been picked for this campaign, given that they DID water down their music/message in order to achieve mainstream success. But no, please learn something about RATM before running your mouth about them being "corporate".

downloading it despite not knowing anything about the song or the band is odd to me too.

all it is to people like that is a bandwagon, belittled into a novelty song aimed at annoying simon cowell - and that makes me a little bit sad.

the first part of your post i've emboldened makes no sense to me, but that's not the part i take issue with so let's forget that bit atm.

the second highlighted part baffles me too - to me, this campaign has "watered down their message" for them. people who knew nothing about the band prior to this and don't want to learn any more about them will now know the song not as a rally against the government and oppression, as intended, but as a song to download blindly to try and piss off simon cowell
