Genius!

For the first time since I was about 9 I actually care who gets to Xmas number 1.

That Rage track is class - fair play to Sony if they thought this up... good work.

Ok, I understand the philosophical ideal behind the campaign but tell me, are we going to have a campaign next year to get the terrible Indie bands out of the charts? If we are going on like this then lets do it properly!

Personally I am not entirely against Cowells acts but I would prefer it if this campaign was "keep covers out of christmas number 1" rather than just X factor as a whole. That is what annoys me the most.

Anyone with a decent musical education would be embarrased.
It's pathetic that people watch one man and listen to that one man only. Think his opinion is the be all and end all.

Waste their money buying this pathetic excuse for a winners song and then moan about a credit crunch, while Simon cowell takes in a cool 100million for the show.

The miniute Simon cowell made it was the miniute he realised that the majority of the public will believe everything they see/hear. Manipulation on a major scale.
I have a ridiculous amount of musical education, and I like The Climb. I'm gonna venture I have more than most on this forum. I'm quite into musical cognition especially, and why we find a song 'catchy' and nice to listen to, even when it's pretty void of any musical expression or talent. The Climb is a good example of this. You shouldn't look down on others for liking a pop song. The reason pop songs are popular is because they're easy to listen to and our brains tell us we like the simple sounds.

I rephrase that... we know the music's rubbish, OK? It's the lowest common denominator, manufactured to the extreme and is devoid of anything meaningful. But we love it anyway

FYI I'm Torrenting both The Climb and Killing in the Name tonight.

It's a great shame many folk miss the point of the RATM campaign and choose to see it as negative idea. Much of the campaign sentiment seems to focus on the idea that there's a great deal of musical garbage marketed to the masses that hits its target and ends up in the charts and, conversely, very little in the way of original material from credible artists that ever gets anywhere near them. This is because the music industry is in the business of selling product not sponsoring the arts, and the lowest risk product they can generate is generic, formulaic pop.

As others have mentioned, there's nothing wrong with pop, I've hurled myself around dancefloors to many a Shakira / Beatles / Maroon 5 track, as well as moshing with best of them to Sisters of Mercy / Rage / AC/DC and all manner of gods of rock. All good times, no need to get snobby.

Problems start to come to light when the population feels like it's being manipulated, and never is that feeling as strong as at xmas. There's been a steady backlash against the commercialisation of xmas for a fair few years, so it's not too surprising that there be a similar backlash when one person is seen to be controlling the lions share of the media for a number of years running.

I don't suppose for millisecond that this will genuinely irritate Simon Cowell, or take a single penny out of his pocket, but it'll put a smile on many, many peoples faces, not least those that will benefit from the money raised. I'm sure Sony UK will be smiling, iTunes will be smiling, no one will die and I'll get to drive around on xmas morning with one of the most spine-tingling hard-rock songs ever written belting out of my car at ear-bleeding volumes! Happy days.

My 2p.

ARGGGHHH THIS IS DOING MY NUT IN

The Christmas number 1 is supposed to be a bit of fun. It would be funny to see RATM take it from The X Factor because it's so totally the opposite to it (a bit like Lordi winning Eurovision in 2006), but people are being so God damn serious about it. The minute you start to think it has any real point is the minute the fun is taken away.

Take a look at what's topped the charts this year and all you're doing is placing a golden crown on a massive pile of horseshit.
I agree with this.

If this campaign was "just a bit of fun" to attempt to get an alternative to No. 1 and raise some money for charity I'd consider participating, as futile as it is. However, people are taking it far too seriously and seem to be under the delusion that they are making a "controversial" political statement that will spark a musical revolution. That and the snobbery towards those buying the X Factor single is really off-putting.

Besides, the X Factor is well off my musical radar (although I quite enjoy watching the auditions), and the winners tend to have a very short shelf life anyway (with the exception of Leona Lewis) so it really doesn't matter to me.

you could argue the best "rock" christmas songs never made it anywhere near the christmas number one.

The RATM song is on the Epic label, which is owned by Sony, so Simon pockets on both songs.

The song is holding up well against 'The climb' on itunes though. During the same time span last year, Alex had amassed a 400% lead on itunes, Joe's is currently about 20% ahead.

Really? I'd say that The Climb is an example of quite a badly written pop song. I've heard it half a dozen times already and I still can't remember how it goes and I couldn't tell you any of the words.

Good examples of pop writing for me would be songs like "Wonderwall" or "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" both of which I could sing pretty much in their entirety after one listen, they are THAT memorable. "Kiss" would be another one. Even if you can't remember a verse you should at least be able to sing along with the chorus ie. "Pokerface" or "Crazy in Love".

Also "the climb"? What is that really? It's a weak idea for a hook at best. IMO

Yes, but he is a major shareholder in Sony and recieves dividends based on how well they do, so if any sony(or subidiary) act does well, and adds to the profits, he benefits.

the climb is rubbish.

did anyone see joe on gmtv this morning? he has got a george formby look to him. maybe the added touch of a ukelele would make the song a bit more interesting.

Lmao this is ridiculously sad and hypcritical. Ironic how it preaches about not following the crowd, yet that's EXACTLY what they are doing. Don't let this crap song get to number one for Christmas, X Factor getting it would actually mean a lot more.

Maybe we should start a Facebook group to get Terry Wogan to No 1 - it's a Christmas song, it's for charity and it won't have Cheryl Cole in the video

Mate, calm down. That won't stop us, we're on a mission. I already have this album and Spotify, I still bought the single 3 times.

I also voted for Joe. I have nothing against him. I hope he does well, but not at Xmas.
