I'm looking for a DVD all in one system to replace an old Philips. I bought a Samsung LCD TV (LE40B750) a couple of months ago but need (want) better sound than the TV can offer.

Basically, I'm between the two models in the title as I can't stump up the extra for Blu ray. Got a Sky+HD and Xbox to connect as well. Both models are around the £200 mark which is around my limit.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks for that!

Actually I was drawn slightly towards the Samsung cos the TV is a Samsung.

Might pop into Comet to check what they've got and see the picture quality on both these (before ordering from Amazon)

I wouldn't get either frankly. All in ones are shot through with too many compromises for my liking but anyway...

The Samsung has a digital audio input which the Panasonic doesn't have. So you would be able to connect the Sky box and games console to the Samsung and get surround sound out of them but not the Panasonic.

Personally I would be off to Richer Sounds. For about £300 - 350 you could get a fairly decent proper AV system with Blu-Ray. Or a DVD system for about £250

That would blow the socks off either of the all in ones in terms of sound quality, the ability to connect extra bits of kit and the ability to upgrade more easily.

Thanks Chris

Any recommendations?

Looking on the Richer Sounds site is a tad confusing - what should I be looking for.

Thanks for your patience - I'm not that knowledgeable about all things AV.

OK both systems revolve around...

AV Amp - Sony STR-DH500 £140ish
http://www.richersounds.com/product/.../sony-strdh500

Speaker system - Yamaha NSP270 £80ish
http://www.richersounds.com/product/...yama-nsp270-si

With either...

Blu-Ray Sony BDP-S350 £100 if you can still get one

or

DVD Toshiba SD390 £40

That is perhaps as budget as you would want to go. The Sony Blu-Ray is a very nice bit of kit (got one myself). The Sony AV amp gets reasonable reviews and Yamaha have made some very fine speaker systems.

The Sony amp will easily let you hook up your Sky box and let you enjoy Surround Sound from those Sky channels that provide it. One thing against the Sony amp though is that although it has HDMI connections it can't extract the audio signal from HDMI so you need separate audio connections from all the bits of kit.

You would have to pay rather more for that convenience unfortunately. Something like the Sony STR DH800 which is perhaps a bit over budget at £260ish

And you woould perhaps have to spend a bit more on speakers to do it justice like these Tannoys for £200

Easy to empty the wallet very fast at this game isn't it

Plenty for me to go at there. It's clearly the way to go - I'd always fancied getting an amp and passing everything through it, but it always seemed a bit too pricey.

And now I'm thinking Blu ray at that price.....

And now I'm thinking about how I go about explaining the benefits to SWMBO.....

Aargh!

Divorce?

Large quantities of chocolate and a night out with Brad Pitt (or other male fantasy figure of choice)?

Fortunately i don't have that problem

It's basically going to cost me a mini-break for the birthday present (which naturally I'd rather spend on the speakers)!
