New DVD/Hard-Disk Recorder
Parents have seen two options for DVD Recorder:-

Panasonic 90609DMR-EZ4VEBK (or E24) £195.58 inc VAT from CostCo
Samsung DVD-SH895M £178.23 inc VAT Hard Disk with 250GB Capacity from CostCo
Their requirements are:-

Hard Disk functionality (decent size - prob at least 150GB);
Freeview (not FreeSat) decoder & EPG;
Record to DVD;
Record "internally" from VHS to DVD (the Panny does this but doesn't have the hard disk so I think this can immediately be discounted as an option, and it needs to be an "internal" recording - i.e. have a slot for VHS tape to go in, and a slot for DVD to go in - as their existing VHS player is buggered).
Doesn't need to have any HDMI out or HD recordable function although this would be nice for future compatibility. Probably looking for something that does a combination of the Panny and Samsung above, as neither of those are suitable for their needs as far as I can ascertain (Panny doesn't have Hard Disk, Samsung doesn't have VCR slot). Any help greatly appreciated. |

Get a Panasonic with hard disc and connect an external VCR cheap or second hand.
Creating dvd's that are vhs quality is of little use unless the VHS material is your own recordings or rarities unavailable on official dvd Samsung are a budget make and are not in the same league as Panny so avoid if possible |

^ Thanks. Any recommendations for a good Panny with decent hard-disk space?

Or you could spend just over £40 less and get one with a 160Gb drive |

I prefer Pioneer who also offer a disc cloning feature like a PC that neither Panny or Sony do but Pioneer seem to have dropped out of the sub £400 market at the moment

Still actively pursuing this - recommended models that do the following (i.e. VCR/DVD Combo):-

Plays VCR's
Allows VCR->DVD disk transfer internally within the machine
Has a DVD drive
Has a Hard Disk drive
Alternatively, recommended models for the following (simpler model):-

DVD Drive
Hard Disk Drive
Many thanks ![]() Do not need 1080p/HD upscaling on either product. |

note that the VCR to DVD connection will not copy copyrighted stuff, I am sure. Personally I wouldnt bother - as already suggested, just copy an external VCR unitl everything is copied, and you will never use the VCR again. - especially when analogue is turned off, and the VCR wont be any use without an external tuner

I would also vote for a Pioneer. But keep the VCR functionality to a separate box for the several reasons already mentioned.
