I've got a blu ray drive on my laptop and have come to the conclusion that the packaged software is rubbish. It's called acer arcade I think, do people know if it is actually rubbish, and if so what software would you recommend I get?

I'm not massively into picture quality etc, but I don't want my blu rays to look worse than the dvds when I link it to the TV!

Acer Software is usually a bit "bloated" but it usually functions ok, why do you think it's rubbish? it should not have any bearing on the PQ

How is the laptop connected to the TV?

If you are using a S-Video or even worse Composite video connection then you will not be getting HD quality pictures on the TV. If you have a HD capable TV then that s going to add to the problem.

Basically what may be happening is the software is scaling down the high definition picture from the Blu-Ray to fire it out of the S-Video/Composite connection. Your TV then scales it back up to fill the screen. But it cannot recreate the data lost in the laptop scaling down so the end result can potentially be fairly dire.

You need a VGA or DVI or HDMI connection capable of the full 1920x1080 pixel resolution of HD off a Blu-Ray disk.

I would hope that with a laptop with Blu-Ray it would have the necessary connections as well.

You also need to ensure that the software itself is sending the full resolution signal to the TV. if it is sending a downscaled version which the TV is then scaling back up then you have the same issues you would if using S-Video or Composite.

I'm using HDMI out, and it's a desktop replacement lappy, so the graphics card is good.

Haven't really looked at the settings yet, I just noticed that the black parts when I watched dark knight were big grey pixles. Like darkness was when you watch a low quality video (a la VCD days).
