Will only play and record a couple of times on my dad's Samsung DVD recorder (sorry, haven't got the model no.to hand) and then a "This disc can't be played or recorded on" message.

Tried them on my LG recorder and some i managed to re-initialize while others were "unrecognsable".

When i gave him the re-initialised discs back the same happened again.

Is this more likely to be a) a dodgy pack of discs b) -RW compatibility problem or c)a common Samsung recorder issue.

Thanks.

Samsung are a budget make but this still should not happen.
Most likely a duff batch.

If they are -RW are you sure you are initialising them in VIDEO mode and not VR mode.
Most recorders wont support VR mode at all but if yours does check it

He kept initialisng the discs in VR mode so i told him to do the rest in Video.
It made no difference.

It's strange how they all worked initially but then suddenly became unplayable on my machine as well.

Thank you for your input.

I use Maxell -R or +R and I've been through several hundred over the last few months without a single failure.

For -RW I use TDK and I've even invested in some Ricoh +RDL without a hitch too
