720p is TVs maximum, but 1080p looks better?
I don't really understand why my Xbox looks better when I select 1080p as my tv is only 720p
Is it harming my tv using the Xbox 360 in 1080p mode? It's a phillips 42" LCD. |

Not at all, if your TV accepts 1080P is simply scales it down to fit it's own screen. Most HD Ready sets aren't 720 though, they are mostly 768 - so if you feed it 720P it has to scale the picture up to fit, and downscaling is FAR easier and better.

if it looks better then it will be fine.
My plasma accepts 1080p but only has 720 lines exactly. 720p stuff does look more detailed as its mapped better 1080p has slightly less detail. so stuff like this depends on the tv etc. |

In addition to what the others have side it may also be that your TV upscales everything to 1080p first - my 768 line Panny plasma does this - so you could be getting a downscale to 720p followed by and upscale to 1080p followed by a downscale to 720/768 if you use 720p.
These questions about the best signal resolution often come up and are very easy to answer. Use the resolution that gives the best picture with your kit, if you can't differentiate then it doesn't matter which you use (though 576i/p may be more convenient for SD over HDMI because it allows auto aspect ratio switching). In most cases 1080p would be best for a 1080p source (eg Blu-ray) even if the TV doesn't have 1080 lines but there are exceptions. |

long long ago you could damage crts, then came multisync...and now its totally irrelevant, no damage possible. just no picture if you go out of bounds.
