You have to be kidding, what Leon was one of the best singers? I like Leon, but sorry there were better singers and songs out there than the dross he got to number one with.
I think you miss the point, most artists have given up even trying to have a number one at Christmas, not because they are not good enough, but due to the amount of people watching a talent show and being manipulated into rushing out and buying the dross single ~ this year some crap called The Climb by some unknown (til now) wannabe that may not even be around in 2 years time making records (Leon being one). Simon et al have found a formula by which to get so many people to buy into this rubbish no other act stands a chance, and the songs are all about the same thing, they are not even Christmas songs, maybe had they bothered to get a Christmassy song written people would be happier with it.
If you look back at some of the fantastic songs which have been number one, ie Bohemiem Rhapsody, Band Aid (great as it was for charity and twice at that) the Beatles, god there are loads that were super songs, and they stayed at the top many of them for weeks, Whitney was there for 10 weeks, Queen for 9 the first time and 5 the second time. There are Slade and Mud as well as Benny Hill, Scaffold and Rolf Harris, Michael Jackson and E17. All totally different songs (other than Queen twice and Band Aid Twice) this is not a full list but it shows that the number one spot has been held by many different people only the Beatles held the number one Christmas spot for three years in a row and back then they were the biggest band around.
It used to be great on Christmas day to find out what the number one single would be, now we all know what it will be which for me is just boring, and I have never bought one of the X factors singles and will not be buying one this year I will however be buying RATM and seriously hope it gets to number one.
