Songs Ruined By The PC Brigade.
Last Year the PC Brigade Banned the word Faggot, from Pogues Christmas Song.
Got me thinking, I'm surprised they haven't Banned Elvis Costellos song Olivers Army. As I'm sure he sings a Line which Goes. One Little White Less ******. I'm sure thats how it goes. I Don't want a Ban come in, as its a Classic Song. |

This is the first time I've heard someone complaining because something hasn't been unnecessarily banned but is the sort of thing that could be in the future.
I can understand radio edits, but it annoys me when censoring gets in versions of songs made for CDs or ends up on the internet. I'd prefer to listen to songs that don't have random sound dips or poor dub-overs half way through. |

As I recall I think it was last year (or the year before) that Radio 1 took the decision to remove the word "faggot" from 'A fairytale of New York', but made a massive u-turn on this decision when many complained.

![]() Speaking of the PC Brigade - I've heard of the song 'Plastic Man' by The Kinks (from the 60's) having a ban at the time because it dared mention the shocking word - are you guys ready for this? Brace yourself as I will now post the most offensive word ever in a song! ![]() Here it is - 'bum'. See I told you it was shocking! Wonder what Mary Whitehouse thought about it! The Kinks mentioned the rude word 'bum' in a song *snigger*

I personally don't really care if a word is removed from a song. I have better things to worry about.
If there's thousands of people who find a word in a song offensive, then I don't care if it's taken out. I'm happy for them. I want people to be free to express their views. If they're against a word being in a song, let them speak out. I don't think it's worth making a fuss if a song is racist, or sexist, or homophobic, or religiously intolerant, but some people do think it's worth it. Just let them be, and stop whining I say. ![]() What would it be like now if we didn't let gay-rights activists speak out, for example? |

People are always far more lenient with foriegn swear words than their own, though. Here in Britain, loads of people know that 'merde' means 'shit', but I bet you coud gat away with the former in many places you couldn't get away with the latter.
It's like in the US, where they creep our swear words into TV as a substitute for their own ones which they can't get past the radar. |

Wasn't Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood banned by the PC Brigade in the 80s?
And Give Ireland Back to the Irish in, what, 1972? This PC Brigade have been around a long time. |

The 'PC brigade' is a figment of the imagination of people who have no idea how or why people may be offended, yet think they should chill out anyway.

I was watching Fairytale Of New York last night on the Chart Show Channel and they beeped out the words "slut" and "faggot" and this was past 9pm.

This PC Brigade have been around a long time. its understandable that 'give ireland back to the irish' was banned in 72, there was an ongoing 'war' with the ira. my little nephew has been stopped singing 'baa baa black sheep', he now has to sing 'baa baa wooly sheep have you any wool'... FFS! ridiculous! besides the 'black sheep' actually provided PLENTY of wool, it wasnt a bad thing! |

dj mike read (mr bankrupt) refused to play it on his radio show, not sure it was a bbc wide ban, they certainly play it now.

Or just when you agree with something. 3 - My daughter hasn't. Maybe people should check properly what school they send their kids to before sending them. Or would that be too much effort? |

Mike Read talks about Relax in Ian Gittins excellent recent book on TOTP. He confirms that he didnt play it because he felt it inappropriate for his timeslot, but that much of what has been written since about it is rubbish.
The BBC did ban it, which as an employee, he had no say in one way or t'uther. He points out that he actually loves the song, contrary to popular belief, and that DJ's over the years have put it on when he's in a club, expecting him to get angry, and are non-plussed when he starts dancing away to it.... |

Dosent mean they are always right though. And that we should automatically accept their viewpoint and be cajoled by a vocal minority.

I am surprised that Lou Reed's Walk on the wild side has snook under the radar with its references to transvestites giving head and "the coloured girls" going do da doo da doo da doo etc.
