Will LED tvs make LCD and Plasma obsolete?
I need to get a flat screen HD tv in the new year and these new LED tvs are supposed to give picture quality and use 40% less electricty and enviromentally more friendly.
Is it a waste of money investing in a LCD or Plasma tv and this type of tv will eventually become obsolete. |

Currently, there are no LED TV's on the market as far as I know, only LCD TV's with LED backlighting.

Correct. The LED backlight replaces the Cold Cathode devices, using less power and more even light across the surface.
I think most adverts I've seen regarding LED TV's is extremely misleading. OLED TV's will be fantastic. Much lower power consumption, no backlight, much higher contrast and 180 degree viewing angle without distortion. They will make LCD and Plasma obsolete just as soon as they make them big and cheap enough. I have an OLED display on a video watch and the image is very nice. |

Geoff. So to make it clear LED tvs are just LCD with LED backlighting? |

Thanks Geoff. It gets more confusing by the day. Never noticed the subtle difference.
So to make it clear LED tvs are just LCD with LED backlighting? Yes they are mate. |

A friend told me to avoid LED backlit TVs because:
1. They tend to be too bright for a domestic situation. 2. The LEDs tend to yellow after a period of time. |

BTW, if you take an LCD panel to pieces (I'm well known for being nosey ) there are four or so 'filters' between the CCFL's and the LCD itself. These evenly distribute the light across the panel.
