For once, I agree with Sting.
I think Sting is often a bit of a tit, but I agree with this:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/ne...music-now.html It's really hard to find new music these days, and when you do it's just some pretentious crap trying too hard to be "different". |

I don't agree, I just think he needs to look a little harder. There's still plenty of new music coming through that's worthwhile imo. It might not be the stuff that Sting enjoys, but then again I may not enjoy the stuff that he likes either. Takes all sorts.

I tend not to look for specific genres, just music which I like (mainly alternative pop music... like Bjork, Bat For Lashes etc) but I am finding it hard to find anything decent.
When I like a song I check out the band but usually end up being unimpressed with the rest of the stuff they have. I miss MTV2's 120 Minutes, because I discovered loads of new stuff on there (it was alternative stuff and where I discovered Sigur Rós, Bat For Lashes, CSS...). It's not on any more and it was on too late anyway. |

Why's he looking for new music? At his age he should be whittling, or playing dominoes down his local.

I'm sure there's plenty of new music out there. It's a big world after all.

Isn't the point that you shouldn't have to look so hard? It's not that different genres aren't popular, it's just that they don't get any coverage apart from from specialist media sources. If they received anything like the publicity given to the standard chart crap the airwaves would carry a much more eclectic mix and kids would feel encouraged to be creative rather than just the eye-candy they are now.

I agree. I see bands who regularly sell out 3,000 - 4,000 capacity venues and yet the amount of airplay they get on any mainstream radio station is zero.
I'm getting a bit bored of people crapping on about how the music industry is dead/dying/evil. And anyway. Sting is a cock. |

I also see bands who sell out largish venues but receive little air play. They're often album acts, though.
Without the internet I would have no access to alternative music (I don't mean alternative rock music... I just mean alternative to what's in the charts). |

I remember a show on, I think, BBC2 that used to show what the music scene was like in other countries, what were the hits, etc. I think it used to be on late on a Saturday. Can't remember what the hell it was called though.

He's not helping the music industry by still existing.
The Police were amazing though. |
