I can't agree with this. A compilation episode - by defeinition - will feature the best jokes from several different episodes. I'll wager if you saw the complete episodes you'd realise most episodes have had "less fuuny bits".

Regarding SYTYCD, I think it is just too soon after the pre-Christmas talent shows. The format, dancing, judges, results shows, musical performances is too same old same old

They should have left it a month before introducing another one of these formats.

Surprised anyone classes TV Burp as the best thing on TV. It's not a bad little show especially for ITV but it's gone downhill a bit this year. Factor in the seemingly never ending repeats / compilations that ITV have stuck on since Xmas and it's looking more tired than ever.

As for CBB trending on Twitter, frankly I'd be more surprised/interested if it wasn't. Then something would be very wrong. But it's all irrelevant now isn't it?

Harry Hill is great - but not as a chat show host. Surprised no journalists have made up rumours of a Parkinson come back yet!


It needs a bit of work, but it's a refreshing change to the usual Saturday night fare, and Paddy McGuinness is a refreshing change to the usual autocue readers.

SYTYCD on the other hand is same old same old from the BBC. Although tonight's show was better than the first episode last week, it's just not packing the punch that it needs too. Also think such dancing doesn't usually work on that kind of stage too - it needs the audience around them. And the group performances just look like the singers have forgotten to turn up. All in all though it is just too BBC for my liking!

So You Think You Can Dance? was hurt at birth by only one audition show. The one thing the BBC should've learnt from Cowell is that people like to get to know the contestants. They should've at least had two weeks of auditions - one for the first stage, one for boot camp.

BBC1'll run away with the ratings tonight. ITV1 has no glue in the schedule and will fall apart because of it. While So You Think You Can Dance could be better it'll do it's job of holding BBC1 together and making it something of an attraction away from the normality of the Lottery and Casualty.

Had a quick watch of the first bit of SYTYCD? after reading all the criticism here. I don't think its so bad. The production is a damn sight better than a lot thats gone before - up there with Strictly and the ALW shows, I'd say. No - its not on a par with the Cowell shows - but they're bound to be limited by the size of TC1 at TV Centre and the budgets, which you could never reasonably expect to match the aforementioned until the show has proven itself as a hit.

All in all, I just think people are jumping to gun on it. Over time, the panels blend, the production improves, the public get to know the contestants, and the crowds become more involved. Even XF and BGT started somewhere. I'm not for a moment saying SYTYCD will hit anywhere like those heights. But theres no reason to suggest it won't be a good, returnable hit. The proof will be in the numbers, I suppose.

I think if there is a second series of SYTYCD which at the moment is very likely, I imagine they'll expand the audition and choreography camp episodes but probably for this series, they are dipping their toe in the water with just one episode but I think BBC One have finally found a Saturday Night LE show for January-March.

I think SYTYCD, Total Wipeout, Casualty and CSI: NY are going to do very well tonight, CSI: NY doing 2.5-3m.

Agreed. I watched 20 mins of it on iPlayer after seeing the slating it's getting here and couldn't really understand what everyone was going on about.

The production values seemed much better than other recent BBC One LE output, and over the weeks people will become used to the format. Crucially though, I can see it bringing a younger audience to BBC One on a Saturday night, something which the channel desperatly needs.

Cramming everything into the first week was probably a mistake though. As other's have mentioned, people (for some bizarre reason) feel the need to get to 'know' people in these shows these days. I'd have given it five weeks of auditions/boot camp and run the first live shows at the start of February, bumping Let's Dance... into late March/early April. It would also have broken up the shows, as BBC One's Saturday night flagship show is going to have consisted purely of dacning from late September until mid-March now.

Also, as sn_22 says, all talent shows started somewhere. Ok, it may never hit the heights of TXF, BGT, SCD, but if it can bring in 8m viewers for the rest of it's run, it'll have done alright.

Can someone tell me though, why does TC1 always seem much bigger when others shows are in it (Comic/Sport Relief, Childen in Need, SYTYCD?, Tonight's the Tonight), but when it comes to Strictly, it looks like everyone has been shoe-horned in?

ABC showed the Dispatches documentary on Katie Piper last night (tv presenter, acid attack).

It got 7.8m viewers, highest ratings for ABC of the night, increased almost 200% on its lead-in and got the highest 18-49 ratings of any show on US TV last night - 2.3/7.

With Strictly you have the audience, the panel (which has a mini stage to itself), the entrance stairs, the main stage, Tess' room, the set (which includes the balconies, where the stanchions/supports take up room), the live band area (including the sound team for it) and the dancefloor.

In comparison to that with the other shows - all sound mixes are probably issued from a simple desk as it isn't live, saving space. No orchestra or stairs immediately deletes the need for that room. There's no 'backstage' studio to contend with. The stages appear maybe sometimes longer but not as deep as the Strictly dancefloor. The audience are in terrace seating which can pack more people in that in normal chairs, which are used for Strictly. The panel's desk was much smaller for So You Think You Can Dance than Strictly's behemoth. All the extras to make TC1 look more like a ballroom than a studio takes up space, creating the 'shoehorned in' feeling.

Of course, it's nothing to when you compare that studio to TC4 where Strictly moves on Children in Need weekend. The set seriously looks tiny then!

It's amazing that anyone could think any UK network is in trouble when compared to NBC.

So basically:
1) Jay Leno is getting demoted and he's angry.
2) Conan O'Brien is getting demoted and he's angry.
3) Either Jimmy Fallon or Carson Daly are probably getting fired... I reckon they'll be angry.
4) NBC will have 5 hours of primetime to fill... by the start of March. They can't fill what they have as it is.
5) NBC affiliates have rubbish lead-ins to their local news just now.
6) NBC affiliates are still going to have rubbish lead-ins to their local news in March.
7) Producers of scripted content are happy at getting 10pm back but still angry at NBC for ever taking it away.

Just to rewind back, this is a problem that stems from 2003-4.

NBC renewed Leno for five years. Somewhere in here there was a major mis-communication, because NBC were under the impression this was it for Leno and he wouldn't sign up again.

So, in order to stop Conan moving networks, they signed him up for five years, with a clause promising him a contract for The Tonight Show from 2009 if he wanted it.

This is well publicised at the time, everyone assumes Leno is happy about it. Fast forward to 2008 and Leno reveals he never said he was going, doesn't want to go and has no idea why NBC are making him go.

So to avoid Leno moving networks (to Fox or ABC, where he would screw Conan), NBC has to find another solution.

Total cock-up. Leno never wanted to be at 10pm, never wanted to be in primetime.

SYTYCD was OK. It started brightly but even accounting for the fact that the dancing part bored me, there were still a few other things I didn't like. I reckon the main show could have done very well but I wouldn't be surprised if the results show comes in a fair bit lower.

ITV's schedule is terrible. TMO never really had a chance. I have no idea why they didn't put DOI on Saturdays. They don't even have Ant & Dec this year.

I'm not hot on American TV in the slightest so this may not be possible - but couldn't NBC split Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien into two three month series a year in the earlier slot, say:

January-March: Conan
April-June: Jay
July-September: Conan
October-December: Jay

?

What's even more bizzare is that while Leno's ratings aren't exactly great, they are around the 1.5 level that was expected.

I don't see how the 10pm ratings are going to get much better from March-September by cancelling Leno.

Not sure, but I think The Tonight Show has to be on and they can't have Jay hosting it or else they owe Conan $50m.

Leno isn't the only problem either. Conan isn't doing too well at 11.30 anyway.

The Leno at 11.30 and Conan at 12 scenario is probably ideal for NBC but they'll be extremely fortunate if both of them agree to it. Plus, there's no guarantee that Leno will come back to his old slot as strong as he was before.

Shame they can't cut Tonight down to six months a year. Maybe they could try and sweeten the pot with Conan?

America's Got Talent has potential but needs a better host than Nick Cannon. Surely Conan could be no worse than Jerry Springer at the role, and he's a bigger name draw after his stint hosting Tonight. It'd be benefical anyway - Conan presenting America's Got Talent would interest some viewers who'd otherwise be apathetic while he may be able to draw more people in to the late night show.

Of course, these are all speculative ideas without knowing the ins and outs of indvidual contracts and such, but I do think there's a way out of this for NBC without them or Conan or Jay losing face.

I'm pretty sure it will be on Saturdays and Sundays from next year. They've got the studio - might as well use it. They'd just need to change some people's contracts.

ITV's main problem at the moment is that they only appear to have commissioned two programmes to fill its entire Saturday night primetime - Take Me Out and All Star Mr and Mrs. I know until contract rights renewal is sorted, its not worth their while doing huge nights of television, but only two hours of original material is stretching it a little. Next week, by the time ITV have even started airing new programmes, BBC1 will have finished Total Wipeout and So You Think You Can Dance and be on to In It To Win It.

Internal bickering at NBC is more entertaining than most of their shows.

In the end, I expect we'll see Leno back on The Tonight Show and Conan jumping ship. It was always going to come to this eventually. NBC seemed to convince themselves five years ago there would be a smooth handover and Jay would be gone. But instead he's stuck around and that was always going to force NBC to choose.

I think short term interests are going to win in this case. They'll keep Leno, because his ratings are bigger - but will have to bite the bullet and lose the man they've been grooming for Tonight for 15 years. Jay might joke that "Fox is nice this time of year", but it'll be Conan who actually finds that out.

I think Conan would certainly bring some interest, but if he leaves NBC then someone (FOX or ABC) is probably going to offer him a late night slot. And late night TV carries huge salaries (Leno was on $30m for The Tonight Show) which NBC can't match for a presenter on AGT.

I thought the $50m compensation owed to Conan if he loses Tonight was excessive before! How come the Late Night Shows are so valuable to the American networks? No channel bothers with post midnight here - not even on New Years Day this year.
