The first series in January 2007 was bizarre: Tuesday to Thursday then the following Tuesday and Thursday... slightly weird. All above 6m though.

US breakfast show ratings as GMA gets a new host.

It's also well ahead of Waterloo Road in Television Forum posts.

Although maybe that just means WR viewers are too engrossed in their programme to spend time on the internet.

There were lots of comments at the time from viewers who said that the BBC should have scheduled it daily, should have had a little more courage.

Since then, of course, Torchwood and Collision have shown there is an appetite for stripped drama.

Criminal Justice didn't fare so well because it was a haeavier drama, but Five Days was a (very entertaining) "routine" crime thriller, of the type that's been so successful for ITV1 this year.

I also enjoyed The Diary Of Anne Frank which was shown in The One Show's slot at the start of the year, and I reckon I enjoyed it more as a stripped drama than I would have as a weekly one, because for that week it became part of my daily routine.

Not that it bothers you much.

You've missed out Masterchef, which for some strange reason is listed under BBC2's Winter highlights, even though the blurb mentions it's on BBC1.

If it was The X Factor I'm sure many of you would be quick to correct it Pizza.

Plus I do enjoy pissing on other people's parades.

A similar thing happened with a couple of the hour-long Emmerdale shows last year: they got two separate ratings in the officials. Although, they weren't needed for the chart of the year.

A Eurovision fan site's saying that a reheasal for this year's pre-selection will take place on the 16th January which is a Saturday. I guess that means the programme will air that night. The BBC's been unusually quiet with what exactly they're doing this year but it is looking likely that it'll be another Your Country Needs You with another famous music author (possibly Gary Barlow). Whether it'll be a series like last year or just a one-off show remains to be seen.

Does this correlate with Sky Bet's idea of where each programme will finish in the day's ratings?

In which case, at Emmerdale. To finish below The Gruffalo, Happy Feet, Mr and Mrs and Top Gear?

They are aware that Top Gear is a repeat of the episode to be shown on Sunday 20th, are they?

TBH the odds follow the money being placed. 1st rule of betting.

Isn't Emmerdale up against the regeneration on Doctor Who? It doesn't have a hope in hell.

People tune in to the XF for the big stars they are having on thats also bound to pull in fans of the certain singer/band.

Yet go back a few years and all the big stars were releasing songs to try and get number1.

Last year Emmerdale got just over 4m when clashing with Dr who at 6pm on xmas day
This year it's an even bigger DW episode

Might be worth a punt on Doctor Who. EE was firing on all cylinders when it had the big win 2 years ago. These days it's not quite so sharp. Plus it's an hour-long episode instead of 2x30 mins like usual which might have an effect.

The last new show aired directly after Superbowl was 1995 when ABC launched a show called "Extreme" which doesn't have a Wiki page. Something I take to mean that it didn't work out!

In 1999 and 2005 FOX launched Family Guy and American Dad but only after The Simpsons.

This year, CBS will go with:
a) The Mentalist
b) NCIS:LA
c) The Big Bang Theory
d) How I Met Your Mother
e) One each of c and d


The problem is that even if they launch a new series after BGT, it then has to run for another 5-9 weeks which takes it into the summer graveyard. So ITV are unlikely to risk one of their better dramas there just to get a BGT leg up.


I reckon quite a few. Sundays show was very good and the show seems to have gone a pretty good job of not just bringing in new viewers over the past 6 years, but also keeping them.


Probably more a reflection on the song. Leona Lewis sold less than Shayne Ward and Alexandra Burke. 9 months later, her first proper single (Bleeding Love) outsold her winners single.

The show survived Leon Jackson winning. Joe may not be a popstar, but at least he can sing and doesn't look like he was dragged onto the stage against his will.

2007 EastEnders xmas was focus of 1 massive storyline
yet this year there's 3 or 4 going and what helps is Enders is on it's normal 8pm friday start and there's nothing big against it.

Mark my words EastEnders will come out top this year(with Dr who a close 2nd)

I dont think it can be argued that ITV havent plugged XF to an extent that would have driven people away from most other shows. They also have tremendous press allies who are now falling over themselves in editorials praising the show. The mania extends to the music charts with a massive XF related presence over the last 8 weeks.

The 19 million peak is immensely impressive -figures that maybe we did not think we would see again outside of England World Cup games. However I think it could be argued that 6 million or so of those were just tuning in for the final build up to the result and can be classed as casual at best or non viewers-and presumably not hanging around to sit through many advert breaks.

and it looks amazing.They really have pulled out all the stops this year.

How strange of ITV to put out the list of 2009 most-watched shows as we enter the festive season...

Ah yes, Christmas Day coming to the rescue of the BBC, when many are captive in front of the TV as granny falls asleep on the remote control.

A sad state of affairs that the BBC have to rely on Christmas for their big hitters these days.
