16.8m was the 15-minute average between 21:15-21:30.

19.1m was the 5-minute average between 21:20-21:25.

I think it's normal for BBC News to use 15-minute figures. They even did that for their Christmas ratings article, reporting 14.4m as the peak for Wallace and Gromit even though the proper peak was 15.9m.

About as I had predicted in terms of the overall average for XF then - though the peak is slightly higher than I was predicting. The share is great too, obviously - but just underlines the sheer madness of those BGT numbers earlier in the year. Thats still clearly the most impressive ratings performance of the year as far as I'm concerned.

Sports Personality held up very well under the circumstances. I was expecting it to struggle even more. A 4.8m average over two hours is still very solid - I wonder what the peak was for that?

Small Island badly hit - but with a half hour overlap and another Cowell show following on, I don't think anyone would have expected very different.

I don't think it's for CBB at all. Firstly they haven't changed the ad style in five years (half the reason nobody watches), and secondly it just doesn't fit in with expectations of the show.

People are saying it must be becauses it's the BB font - but that's the C4 font too.

I wouldn't split the final, but I'd definately move the final to Sunday, having the heats Mon-Fri, a night off on Saturday (so Friday's acts aren't as disadvantaged as usual), and then the final on Sunday.

I think only Derren Brown's Lottery stunt would rival it, and that was an average over 10 minutes, not nearly two hours. The peak figure for Elf will be interesting.

Not any higher at all. They weren't as popular as people liked to make out, as the voting figures released last night revealed - they were never in the top three. And no more than 1% of viewers ever voted for them.

Amazing ratings around for all the channels last night! Obviously amazing for X-Factor! But Susan Boyle's show is the one that sticks out for me, wow! SPOTY held up pretty well too, and BBC2 got some fairly good figures across the night. WOW for the Elf rating, i know it got more last year, but just to think its a repeate of a film you can pick up on DVD for £3, thoes ratings are brilliant, and bodes well for Mirical On 34th Street next week.

So XF concludes with an average of 2m less than the BGT final despite the latter airing on a fine Saturday evening in June in contrast to XF's 6 degree Sunday night.

A stunning figure but an under performance in contrast to BGT.

XF final was two hours long compared to BGT's 30 minutes. The average was always going to be down. Pointless comparison.

That is phenomenal for the X Factor. I had a feeling last night's show would improve on Saturday's underwhelming performance because last night was live event TV that no XF viewer wanted to miss.

However, I'd prefer it next year if the final was done in one night. Sundays seem to be the night to get the big figures, so it would be good if they put the final on a Sunday next year. Last night's show was unbelievably padded out in my opinion, plus if you add in Saturday's live show as well, it just dragged. It obviously did the ratings no harm but you have to wonder, how long will it be until the viewers get tired of the show being stretched out?

The Saturday/Sunday format worked, but the final needs to be done in one night if you ask me.

The peak just fell short of 20 million, which makes me wonder will the show just carry on growing especially if Cowell chooses to make these rumoured changes, or has the peak for XF/BGT happened this year? The changes for XF next year could mean peaks of 20m + if they are implemented successfully.

The 15.62 million average over two hours figure is astonishing in todays tv world-although I dont think X Factor would have made the mark it has done in the pre satellite age.
However its a mark of the marketing of the show and the success of BGT that at its very peak last night 6 million extra people(previously casual or non viewers) tuned in just to see the result. That is quite an achievement of status given that the two finalists were arguably as bland as its possible to be and for whom many millions will not make a point of watching again.
I have glanced on the XF forum and there are people on there who would seem to need therapy because they wont get their weekly fix.
I dont understand the huge appeal but you cannot argue with the figures.

How I wish the results show had only been half an hour - we could have had 17m+ instead of 15m+. But I suppose 15m over two hours is better for advertisers than 17m over half an hour. Not as good for ratings geeks though

Excellent for X Factor. I predicted 15.5 on the RPG so I will take 15.6m. Does anybody know whether the peak for BGT was a 1minute peak aswell?

Also pretty amazing that 31 million were watching tv last night at 9pm, and over 10 million werent watching X Factor.

15.5m over 2 hours is an INCREDIBLE audience by any standard on any day in any season for goodness sake. 120 minutes! 15.5 million!

How anyone can call that disappointing is beyond me.

Stunning were my words. I would however have thought TXF would be less South than 20m, conditions considered.
