But Strictly's ratings aren't miserable.
The first show wasn't 1.8m down.
The semi final performance show got 9.9m (41.2%) last year, this year it got 8.7m (36.9%) so it's 1.2m down. Strictly didn't clash for half an hour against the X Factor Final last year, so last Saturday's rating was obviously going to be down compared to last year.
The semi final results, though, was the same as last year: both 7.3m.
Overall, this series is down 7% compared to last year according to the overnight ratings. In the proper officials, the decline is less at around 5%.
A 5% drop year on year isn't what I'd call "miserable". The show built up its ratings for three years in a row between 2006-2008, it was inevitable that one year there would be a drop. It can't keep rising all the time.
It's still the second most watched series of Strictly ever. The press have over-exaggerated Strictly's decline.

BGT final had a 5-minute peak of 19.2m. A couple of reports did say at the time that the peak was 20.1m - perhaps that was the 1-minute peak?
What were the official ratings for BGT and overnight ratings for BGT? It may give us some indication of how much people may have caught up on it using PVRs or repeats etc...
Anyway; BGT became extremely popular fast. I didn't even realise it was a daily program or that the final was happening. I only knew Susan Boyle came out of it and America was drooling all over her.

Surely you must be a bit disappointed. You did predict a 20 million average, didnt you?
So, it came good in the end...surprising after that rating we saw for Saturdays show it did actually match that 20m figure that we all kept going on about (give or take 0.2m).

I reckon they'll do it again next year and maybe hope that a more inspiring group of finalists will keep the numbers up for the Saturday show. One night might give us bigger ratings but that isn't always the best thing for ITV if it means cutting the running time in half.

The mistake ITV made was starting it 30 minutes earlier, because if it was on from 20:00 to 21:30, it would have averaged 16.13m (54.1%) - had it been on from 20:00 to 22:00, it would have averaged higher probably.
Removing commercials from last night's final, I get about 16.15m. Timeshift I'm guessing it may be near 16.5m.
The Susan Boyle Story will end up in the Top 10 at the end of the year.

Good to see TXF put to bed for another year, it really did catch the public imagination. Averaging 15.62 million is a very good figure for the show.
The thing with shows like this is that for most people the winner is now going to be soon forgotten, he will have a core fan base of 1-2 million or so who will buy the single and go to the live concerts. I don't quite see him scaling Will Young heights of success but good luck to him.

My thoughts are that the 2 night show worked commercially in allowing ITV to maximise ad revenues. The placing of the show from 7.30 to 9.30 meant they could sell 36 minutes ad time in both shows (out of a possible 40 minutes allowed in primetime from 6-11pm)
However it was overly strung out from a viewing perspective. They really needed 3 contestants in the final night to reduce the padding. Maybe next year they can go into the final weekend with 4 contestants and eliminate 1 on Saturday?
BTW what would have happened if 1 had to withdraw in the week running up to the final?

IMO last night's show worked very well with just two contestants. All the other performances were highly entertaining and the two hours flew by.
I bet next year they'll surprise the contestants and audience by not eliminating someone on the last Saturday show and having all three at the Sunday final.

I dont think there is any doubt that BGT has introduced a whole new audience of regular viewers to XF, whether the launch show was down or not. The two are sparking each other off now because viewers know they get the same payoff. Dont forget it was not all that long ago that Strictly was regularly beating XF. Now two 19 million peaks tells its own story.
As for whether all this can be sustained- the Susan Boyle introduction was cleverly staged and whether viewers will get as hooked on something similar remains to be seen. Personally I think the bandwaggon will keep all four wheels for some time yet, if only because the press will pursue the shows relentlessly.
I wonder what the 'ITV reality upspring' this year means for Dancing on Ice, in what 4 weeks time? Another set of increased ratings... or just the 'normal' 7/8m for DOI?

It will be interesting to see. What is apparent is that, with every huge rating, every press report, ITV cement their position as the home of entertainment. The BBC, on the other hand, rarely get positive press(articles always seem to migrate towards Jonathan Ross salary no matter where they start) and look increasingly lacklustre. This trend can only hurt shows like SYTCD and the forthcoming Lloyd Webber series. The 50 minute Lottery shows have simply become filler's which is a ridiculous state of affairs for a channel which once boasted the biggest names.

Well it means one thing. Lots more of the phone in reality type stuff. Especially next years XF. God help ITV when this format stops becoming a draw, cause I don't see ITV investing heavily in other programming genres that cater to a different viewing audience anytime soon.

I didn't think the final night needed 3 contestants...just that we didn't need to see Olly and Joe sing yet another song they'd already sung before (after their audition song and judges choice the night before) we needed them to sing something new, or even an Xmas song.
And now it's axed they make the effort!
I was just about to ask whether people think it would have done better in an 8-10pm slot (or 7-9pm slot).
No quite as they're still only limited to 6 three and a half minute breaks within the show, plus one before and one after, so 28 minutes of ads in total.
No - as we've seen with Big Brother having too many in the final really takes away from the event and the achievement of getting there.
The lesson learned is definately to move the third place reveal to Sunday (I'd open Saturdays show with a group performance by just the final three to make up some time). Also there needs to be some new performances over the weekend - far too many that we've seen before this year.

Aside from GM and PM performing the rest of TXF was pretty bland especially the perfomances of The Climb single.
SCD has a core adult audience can't imagine many teens who would admit to watching it really it doesn't have any appeal for a 10 year old.

Robbie probably had a heart attack when his beloved non tabloid BBC news started doing a report on the size of X Factor's ratings! Let alone a Newsnight interview with Simon Cowell!
Sky News did a piece just after 5 blethering on about the importance of social networking to the show. ITV trailed some kind of profile of Cowell's rise as their lead for News at Ten, presumably not willing to let it all go to Newsnight.

There was an article in either Broadcast or MG the other week which said that ITV were selling the slots on the adults 18-34 ratings because they are the most lucrative demographic and XF gets far more than anything else.
Great ratings for X Factor and Susan Boyle, Xtra Factor seemed a bit low considering it was the final but I think Susan Boyle was the reason. SPOTY held up and Channel 4 and Five did well with Epic Movie and Constantine with only 0.1m between them.
Elf did great for the third year in a row, It bodes well for both Matilda and Miracle on 34th Street.

Hope ITV enjoyed last night as I think four of the next five nights will be sub 5m (I would say sub 4m, but Out of My Depth may achieve above 4m tonight). Great figures for The X Factor, and it's bounced back after only a 'reasonable' Saturday. The other channels did well around it though - Sports Personality of the Year held steady and Elf performed well.
