I'd say 7.5m for EastEnders. Or even 8m is possible. It is Boxing Day not any old 'Saturday'.

I agree. Most people have a TV Guide magazine or listings online surely? It's not a normal Saturday but surely that doesnt mean that EastEnders fans will sit and watch YBF when they wouldnt normally, completely oblivious that EE is on, just because they haven't seen a promo ad for it? If so, buy a TV guide and plan your viewing!

As I understand, it's because "BBC HD" is a specific channel, whereas "ITV HD" is a red button service which viewers, in theory at least, have to select from the red button whilst watching ITV1 - so it counts towards ITV1's figures. The BBC offers HD programming for all 4 of its channels, but because of clashes etc, they can't always simulcast a show at the same as BBC1,2,3,4 carries the SD version. They also put out a lot of repeated HD programming to pad out the schedule.

As yesterday's ratings show, the BBC are missing a trick by not having the HD service a red button option - but perhaps it would cause too much of a scheduling headache to have to dovetail HD programming across all 4 of their channels, particularly as more shows are made in HD.
Sky Sports HD channels are also separate channels and yet their ratings are included in the Sky Sports main (ie SD) channels ratings.

So why cannot BBC do the same?

I don't think making HD a red button option is the answer - it's much slower than just going to a separate channel.

I know im too late to this party, and its been said many times before, but its a real shame we have never had anything else from The Incredibles, plenty of scope for a prequel series about how Mr Incredible meet Elstagirl

Thanks dubsj.

Good rating for EastEnders considering it was the only soap on last night. Also very good for Total Wipeout... that doesn't bode very well for Take Me Out next week if it proves a flop.

Very good ratings for Ant and Dec, along with Morecambe and Wise.

Thnaks dubsj, Ant and Dec did well, and about in line with expectations. Wipeout did very well, and EE did well considering it is never on Saturdays. How did Pirates, TV Burp, Family Fortunes and All Star Impressions do? Thanks.

Wonderful news! That'll teach ITV not to commission such dross.

Victoria Wood and Ant and Dec the same at 6.8 million. Although seen in very different ways seemingly.

I thought VW was poor, but the same can be said for A and D, who need to get away from the Noels House Party derivatives and get some decent scripts. Last nights audience arrived with expectation and I cant imagine many went away very fulfilled (unless accompanied by a decent medium dry).

Very ordinary figures. Lower than an average Saturday night.

Although next week's Total Wipeout is basically a repeat of this weeks - just with different celebs. Annoys me it gets decent figures when it's one of the poorest versions of the franchise.

I think Take Me Out might do OK actually - as dating shows goes it looks fairly original. The main problem though is it's pretty much got to stand on it's own two feet - might have been better holding it back until TV Burp returns and airing it after that.

Excellent Ratings for BBC1 Christmas day.

slightly dissapointing for doctor who though I expected at lkeast 11m.

EastEnders did very well and it was phenominal episode.

I hope new years day makes over 10m

Good night for BBC1 overall, with Total Wipeout performing well and denting Harry Hill on the other side. EastEnders had a pretty good rating, it's similar to what Tuesdays and Thursday episodes get. Solid for Pirates of the Carribean against tough competition.

Harry Hill underperformed, I expected at least 5m. I'm quite surprised by the rating! You've Been Framed did okay against EE and better than I expected for Ant and Dec. Family Fortunes also did well, but the Impressions Show rightly flopped.

I thought TV Burp would have got better than 4m myself... other than that and The All Star Impressions Show, a good night for ITV.

Not very much Xmas cheer on here it seems. Just about every show and the general quality of Xmas TV and the ratings all rubbished. Have to say I do disagree about Xmas day I thought DW and EE were great and much better than last year and the 3 comedies worked really well.

A couple of other obsevations

There seems to have been a rush to judge DW ratings - I expect 1m+ timeshifts so it will finish in line with previous years.

Some of the comparisions seem a bit odd. Ant & Dec get 6.8m which is probably less than expected but it seen as very good BUT Victoria Wood gets the same rating and is a flop - sorry dont agree with that at all.

I also have to smile when BBC1 gets around 40% share from 5-30 to 11-30pm on Xmas day and then gets told by some on here how it needs to rethink its strategy.

Official Xmas Doctor Who ratings:
- 2005 - 9.84m
- 2006 - 9.95m
- 2007 - 13.31m
- 2008 - 13.10m
- 2009 - ???

It will beat 2005 and 2006, but lose out in the past 2 years.

I also have to smile when BBC1 gets around 40% share from 5-30 to 11-30pm on Xmas day and then gets told by some on here how it needs to rethink its strategy.
Yes, it gets 40% because of what has become of its formulaic and extremely bland line-up which nowadays consists of:

1) Doctor Who
2) Strictly Christmas Special
3) EastEnders
4) [insert comedy here]

There's no variation, no attempt to change the schedule... effectively its the same 4 things. I like Doctor Who, and I like EastEnders... but it needs a bit of a remix.

The schedule kills the competition... why do you think ITV don't try? They tried a Dancing on Ice Christmas Special last year, got 9m regular series; got 5m last Christmas.

Viewers for whatever reason, for the past few years, are starting to choose BBC One on Christmas Day by default.

Even if ITV rolled out all their big hitters, BBC One would still win. Guaranteed.

Another great night for BBC1 with EE doing well out of its normal slot and day. Good for POTC to sustain over 6m over 2 1/2 hours.

Very good for A&D and ASFF only slightly down on what it was getting in its Sunday 7pm slot. I think the XF has given it a huge boost this year as I'm sure episodes after XF last year were getting around 4m?

Biggest shock of the night for me though is TV Burp! Not quite sure why it was so low and probably the lowest episode this year. Most of it was all brand new material and for then YBF to beat it, up against EE is even more bizarre. All I can think of is that the audiences for TW and TV Burp are very similar, but even then I thought viewers would choose the latter! Hopefully the earlier than usual repeat can pull in another 3-4m tonight.

Also not quite sure why ITV have left tonight completely empty. One of the worst schedules ITV have had in a long time. Repeats up until 9pm and only then we have a film premiere which I can see only just scraping 3m.

Poor for TV Burp - though it was a below-par show, and frankly, you can see the format is getting a bit tired now. I think the increasing amount of studio-based slapstick, and less focus on the actual clips, is driving viewers away. It's less a TV clip show, more "the Harry Hill Show".

I think they need to get back to basics and refresh the show a bit for 2010 if they want to try and regain the lost viewers.

BBC1 got what they deserved for their rubbish line-up - rubbish ratings. The shows were there for a cracking Boxing Day line-up, but on the wrong days.

Not that the BSI will learn anything from two successive rubbish Boxing Days...

so axe based on one poor rating when it has been getting 11m [across 2 nights admittedly] every weekend since October?

Its Christmas week when nobody watches ITV. It got about the same last year on Christmas Day. Its not a problem. Everything will be back to normal when it resumes its normal Saturday shows in January.

Interesting to see a key ITV1 prime-time show being beaten into third place by a BBC2 comedy repeat from the 1970s - 2nd night in a row too.

Perhaps ITV1 should start raiding their archive, seems a good way of delivering a 3m+ audience....

Who said "axe"? I wasn't commenting on the ratings as such, just giving some observations on the quality of the show, and how it is getting a bit tired.
