It's not been a good weekend for TV Burp, has it?

Some surprising ratings there. Everything on BBC1 apart from Outnumbered, about 1 million down on what I thought. I'm sure Casualty normally manages about 6m for its Sunday episodes and drawing level with Midsomer is pretty shocking. Not quite sure why Cranford was down so much..

ITV1 held up much better than I thought. Even The Holiday pulled in a decent share, as it was on till 11.30pm!

Great for Top Gear to be the most watched show of the day and good for James May considering it was a repeat.

Though the rating of the day has to be Outnumbered...managing almost 5m in a tough slot when everything else is down anyway is pretty good. I caught it last night after only catching odd scenes from the previous series and thought it was excellent-a great original comedy and it needs something better than a Sunday 10.30pm or Saturday slot for the next series definetely.

What did we learn last night then?

Casualty is the new Bill
Top Gear can get good ratings when the opposition is weak
Flipping a coin gets tiresome after a while
People had better things to be doing last night

Very respectable for Midsomer.

Great night for BBC2, especially JM's Toy Stories cos that was a repeat from Christmas day when he had 2.6m.

I wonder what TG will get tonight. The Bolivia special repeated in exactly the same slot it had last night.

Good figure for Outnumbered. Will be comfortably above 5m in the officials. But still should have been giving a better slot.

Anyone know the rating for Doctor Who repeat on BBC3 last night? Ta.

Am very pleased that Outnumbered managed to get a great figure, depite the awful slot; hopefully it means the next series sees the boost it deserves.

At the moment The Bill can only dream about gettting 4.5m. It'll be interesting to see if Casualty takes the large timeshift audience it had when it was on against X Factor. I'm a long-time fan of Casualty (right back to series 1 or 2) but I can't be bothered with it at the moment.

Top Gear had 5.2m overnights when on against IAC (strong opposition). That's a brilliant audience for BBC2. (A lot of the time that would be considered a brilliant audience for BBC1 and ITV1 these days.)

I'm actually thinking Heads Or Tails ratings are holding up rather well, considering how awful the programme is.

And finally - if people are finding other things to do other than watch TV, we should celebrate that. (Unless they're out getting rat-arsed which is only marginally less damaging to the brain cells than watching....<fill in your own programme or genre here>.)

Meanwhile today's Scottish Daily Record reports that STV will be opting-out of less ITV drama next year.



No mention of which dramas it will or will not be.

Probably stuff they didn't show last year, possibly at a knock-down price by delaying screening it.


Back to ratings and I know BBC1 vs ITV1 has been much discussed, but would be interesting to see the audience share for all the major digital channels for the year to see who is winning that battle, and where non-Freeview channels like Gold and FX fit into the grand scheme of things, and whether a year on anyone is actually watching Watch.

My betting is that people chose last night to do post Christmas parties/get togethers.
Casualty maybe has not had the strongest storylines to bring out of the X Factor shadow and its lost a million or so from the SCD final night. I still think it does a job on Saturdays but I wonder what would be its best slot if it was ever moved days?
Top Gear is a big hitter whatever George S might think-its survived a time move and huge opposition on ITV to bring in brilliant ratings for BBC2.

Poor for Cranford, and no real explanation for it - presumably The Holiday did very well indeed for the first hour/90m then tailed off over its rather long 2h35m slot, probably when Outnumbered came on. Be interesting to see a breakdown.

Either way, a good night in ratings terms for ITV1, it looked like their weakest night of the whole festive period, but clearly not.

Glad Outnumbered is in line for a >5m audience (up on what it got last year on the 27th in a 9.30pm slot with no obvious competition). It should have aired sooner, although watching it last night it does still have a "not quite mainstream enough" feel about it.

The 7.2m peak for TG is really good, and obviously explains why Casualty fell short. A strong 3m for the James May repeat after his excellent 2.6m on Christmas Day.

I wonder if that performance on Christmas Day helps explain why SCD was a million down on expectations, given that you wouldn't normally expect to see anything on BBC2 on Christmas Night opposite SCD and Corrie get more than a million, let alone nearly 3m?

As for tonight, I can't wait to see Englishman in New York's ratings tomorrow...

I would expect under 2m but then again , this week has been full of surprises.

I saw the "An Englishman In New York" DVD in the shops already yesterday, if it wasn't gunna strugle as it is! It won't really have any effect on the rating, but its another case of strange scheduling compared to DVD releases.

I knew ITV2, ITV3 and Sky Sports would be up there, but I didn't think CBeebies would be that high, above BBC3!

So Christmas Day EastEnders got 13.1m when you add up the omnibus and the BBC 3 repeat!

It probably should have aired months ago, it has been sat on the shelf gathering dust whilst ITV decided what on earth to do with it.

Likewise Gav & Stacey should have finished its run before the DVD went on sale in early December.


I thought Christmas ratings were dull and a non-event?


Given that BBC3/4 and CBBC/CBeebs don't transmit 24/7, how does this affect share? Do they get a 0% share for the hours they don't transmit?

Indeed, given that CBBC-BBC3 and CBeebs/BBC4 (or vice versa) are the same channel, should they not be reported as such?


More than that probably because the 1.7m is over three hours. When BARB included repeat showings they added in that element of the omnibus which related to the specific showing.

A lot of fans probably watched it more than once...

Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death is on tonight at 7pm. Should we expect another 5 million to take it over the 30 million mark?

The low ratings have been the story! When a channel builds its entire strategy on 2 weeks and half way through the best response to the figures could be summed up as "meeh!" and this after they have given us their "better" offerings, then I would expect a quick inquest and a few heads to roll.

So low figures can be interesting after all I suppose. I have seen the error of my previous statements

Funny night, really. Great for Top Gear - the show was right on the top of its game and that proves it still has very wide appeal. I actually think it held up well, in the 5m's during some massively difficult competition in the autumn. It looks like the extra 15 minute head start it took over Casualty also really hurt the latter.

9pm looks like a bit of a dead spot. Cranford's numbers were sadly down, though the shares were still more than respectible. As suggested, The Holiday must have done very nicely with a certain portion of the Cranford audience.

All this makes it very difficult to predict how the two new dramas tonight will perform. Why is there an expectation that An Englishman in New York will flop terribly? I understand its a sequel - how did the original do? I'm not sure about the Triffids either. Looks like they've made a real investment into this, and I hope it works out. Then again, we are back to the usual Monday proceedure where ITV have the advantage of a Corrie lead-in.

The original was shown nearly 35 years ago, so I dont think thats too important! The subject matter is not typical ITV matter. Its really a BBC2/ Ch4 show. Its ITVs BAFTA attempt (hence why its being show before the end of the year, but in a dead week)

Every week Broadcast prints the Top 12 best performing digital channnels by audience share and CBeebies is always well up there.

I don't know what that says about the nation's parents, but that seems to be the default setting for Pete and Sue in Outnumbered. When the kids get too much, it's "Who wants to go and watch television?"
