Course they are news. Its unprecedented for 2 senior ex ministers to do this so close to an election. Given that the public utternances of politicians are the tip of the iceberg compared to what is going on behind closed doors this is really a big story indeed,

When the snow has melted the record public debt that Brown has created will still be here, so yes who runs the country does matter just a bit.

E4 is now more popular than Five among the 16-34 demo:
Quote:
“E4’s reach among young viewers rose to a record high in 2009, with the digital channel overtaking Five in its share of the key 16 to 34 demographic.

E4 now commands 4.5% of 16 to 34s, making it the most watched digital station with this age group, ahead of ITV2’s 4% and BBC3’s 2.4% and inching ahead of Five’s 4.2%.

The Channel 4-owned youth channel grew its share of the demographic by 8%, helped by sitcom The Inbetweeners (pictured), which averaged 1.5m across its run, up from 0.5m for its first series the year before.

Drama Misfits drew more than a million per episode, with PVR viewing adding around 20 to 30% more viewers.

Recasting Skins also helped, with 16 to 34s making up a record 61% of its audience.

Paul Mortimer, who is E4’s acting head during Angela Jain’s maternity leave, said the channel would remain focused on under-35s as it seeks to find programmes to replace Big Brother in 2011.

“In particular, E4 is looking to enhance its slate of quality drama and comedy, whilst complementing this with new entertainment formats, specials and fact ent series that speak directly to older teens and the twenty-something audience,” he said.

Film4 also grew its share of 16-34s viewing to 1.2%, up 9% year on year, while More4 grew its share of its target audience, ABC1 adults by 11% year on year, to 1.27%.

Channel 4 recorded a portfolio share of 11.6% for 2009, with the digital channels contributing 35% to overall share.

The core Channel 4, plus the time-shifted Channel 4+1, achieved an all hours share of 7.5%, level with BBC2.

That's excellent for E4, and ITV2 isn't too far off overtaking Five among the demo. I'm expecting ITV2 to beat Five in the 16-34 share by this time next year.

In other news, it looks like Inspector George Gently has been picked up for another series by BBC1. The last series did well, averaging 5.9m.

How much is due to BB though, as this still had a strong 16-34 following? Taking the wall to wall coverage off E4 has got to hurt them surely?

Thanks to MattJ for the figures
----
Bloody high all around, as expected 27 million watching TV last night.

Great figures for Emmerdale and EastEnders, especially for the later. Holby City did brilliantly, as did the News bulletins. 9.15m for a news bulletin is sensational!

Disappointing for Above Suspicion though, thought it would have been higher than Monday night against weaker competition.”

Fantastic figures. Many have mentioned EE and Emmerdale but despite the 8 million that saw the latter Mastermind was only 1.5 million behind it. The regional news at 9 million + is quite amazing as those figures beat virtually all bar soaps and reality.

I don't think BB contributed much to E4's 16-34 share as there's not a lot coverage of it on E4 these days. The daily live feed has pretty much all gone, and there's just BBLB (which rates poorly) and BBBM (around 0.5m).

I'm guessing Friends might have a large following among 16-34s, and we know that rates well every day with its numerous repeats, 365 days a year for E4 !

Good ratings last night. The 6-7pm newshour being the main story. Over 9m for BBC Regional News is good but the 5.5m for ITV News is not to be sniffed at either.

E4 has a great line up for that age group.
How I Meet your mother, The Big Bang Theory, 90210, Gossip Girl (think they're all on that channel ) and the likes of Skins are all very much geared towards, students early twenties, though gotta say I am a huge fan of The big bang theory myself.

Gossip Girl is on ITV2 (and doesn't perform all that strongly for them either, although it does seem to do well on the ITV Player).

That's slightly problematic for Holby City - they've got a crossover storyline with Casualty in late January/early Feb, so I'd expect HC to run 2 episodes on the w/c 19th or 26th Jan to avoid delaying their half of the crossover.

Reckon we could get get MASSIVE ratings tonight - Oxford was like a ghost town at 5pm, its usually so busy but it was like the middle of the night - bizarre.

Im predicting 10million for Nigel Slater!

I would have thought the News special would be the big winner of the night. Or it may well be the regional news again like yesterday. Pity that it's quite a weak schedule all round tonight - last year it was a Monday when we had all the snow and a much stronger night for programming.

Your username gave me a clue.

It's funny how we build pictures of posters in our minds. When I first joined this thread a few years ago, for some reason I pictured George as a kindly, white-haired retired gentleman reminiscent of George the office worker from Men Behaving Badly.

And I pictured Zoe M as a shapely, attractive blonde lady. Turns out George is actually around my age, and Zoe's a fella!

NCIS had its second best audience ever. The Biggest Loser had its highest premiere ratings ever and was the top rated show of the night. NCIS:LA also pulled in its second best audience since the premiere in September.

Appalling night for ABC.

Any predictions for tonight?

It's pretty tough to predict, but I had ago!

BBC1:

Celebrity Mastermind - 6.8m
Nigel Slater - 7.2m
News Special - 8.8m
My Family - 8.0m
New Tricks - 6.6m

ITV1:

Emmerdale - 8.9m
Lion Country - 4.0m
You've Been Framed Kid's Special - 5.5m
Anove Suspicion - 6.8m
C14E
06-01-2010
WWE RAW (USA) - 5.5m
TNA IMPACT (SPIKE) - 2.2m

TNA got record ratings, but it's still far from being much of a concern for WWE.

TNA averaged 2.5m for its first hour, declining throughout. Its previous record average was 1.9m.

Glad my 11m prediction for EE came true for last night, can't see anything aside from BBC Weather Special getting even close to 10m tonight though.

Can see BBC3 doing more than ok tonight from 7.40pm Madagascar film followed by King Arthur film to 22.55.

Personally I would have preferred this on BBC1 to Nigel Slater - Weather Special - New Tricks - News etc.

Here is my prediction for tonight

BBC1:

Celebrity Mastermind - 7.1m
News Special - 10.50m
My Family - 8.5m
New Tricks - 7.9m

ITV1:

Emmerdale - 8.1m
Lion Country - 3.9m
You've Been Framed Kid's Special - 4.5m
Above Suspicion - 7.8m

Do we really need hourly updates on a leadership ballot or challenge that is simply not going to happen? Maybe you find hours of Labour MPs putting out statements refuting such talk interesting but I don't. It might be a big story if anybody who was particularly relevant or important in politics today publicly subscribed to this idea. But since that isn't the case the story has no weight at all and should not be dominating the news agenda.

Back to the ratings... I noticed The Apprentice USA keeps getting pushed further and further back in the BBC One schedule (last week 11:30, next week 11:55). Is it safe to assume it's not rating all that well? I don't know why they couldn't find a more suitable slot on BBC FOUR.

Thats the unique circumstance of the internet. No-one really knows. But I had exactly the same impression about George and Zoe so I am slightly in a state of shock too. As Chris is potentially a male or female name I perhaps should confirm that Im a fella too.........like Zoe.

Horrific numbers for ABC. I guess they're just burning those shows off now, but even still...

And who knew a weight loss show would skew so young? NCIS almost doubles its overall viewership, but is still behind in the demographic! As I was saying yesterday, we'd have such a different conception of what was a success and what wasn't if we judged out ratings by demos.

NBC must be thankful for The Biggest Loser. That, Sunday Night Football and The Office seems to be all thats keeping them going these days.

Come on - it's only half an hour earlier and time and time again we've seen if the shows are there, the viewers are there early on Saturday night too.

With ITV's earlier Saturday schedule being nothing special either most Saturday night viewers are just waiting for the main programmes to kick off - and I'm sure over the hours the BBC will get a better audience - basically Live from the Apollo will get a bigger audience at 9.40pm than My Family or something like Hole in the Wall would at 5.30pm.

BB has long been kicked to the extremities of E4's schedule, which though may have boosted E4's overall ratings (though C4 have never provided the facts to back up that claim), certainly didn't help C4's biggest commercial success.
