Fully agree with you, if there's no surround information within the soundtrack then true surround can not be played back - though you can apply DPL to any 2channel soundtrack, but all you will get is nothing more than a soundtrack that has been forced out by the decoder.

Yeah - no centre on 3channel surround, but if you had the left/right speakers positioned correctly you got a good stereo image and the dialogue sounded to come from dead centre. The addition of the centre channel gave an improvement to the front soundstage when 4channel arrived.

DPLIIz adds two front effects channels, similar to what the higher end Yamaha amps used to give, or still do, personally I've never seen the point to them.
