According to numerous posters on twitter - just trying to find a firmer link!

Official Charts Company: "Rage Against The Machine starts the week with a 7% lead over Joe McElderry. The race to be Christmas number one is on."

Trouble is as the twitter link above says, will the cd sales catch it up when it goes on sale tomorrow?

Probably. I think Joe'll do it, though I'd rather it was RATM.

I don't understand why they couldn't have chosen a more appropriate alternative though

Because of the play on words as it's a rage against another X-Factor number 1 at Christmas.

this early lead is vital, considering that Joe gets cd released tomorrow.

also i think this will encourage more of the campaigners to buy Killing In The Name, to keep them ahead. if Joe was ahead by now then many of them might of just given up.

The song was chosen specifically because of the lyrics. Not the swearing (which doesn't appear in the radio cut anyway) but the message in the lyrics that people are doing exactly what they are told to by the massive publicity machine that is X-Factor and all the related media (check out every music download site you can think of - first link you see is for the X-Factor song) but that some of us are rebelling against such blatent manipulation.

Having said that, I'm gutted the Muppet song wasn't chosen. "Mama! Mama?..... Dada!"

I understand why they chose RATM, but they should have chosen another single that was out the same week, that way all the CD sales would count towards it also.

so, just to be clear, the whole Rage Against the Machine thing is in protest of anyone artificially increasing sales of a single?

no, it's because everyone is sick of Cowell and x factor getting cheap tacky covers to christmas no.1 every year.

no?

so you wouldn't say that Cowell was guilty of artificially increasing sales of a single?

RATM have had an extra day of sales and Joe's physicals haven't been accounted for yet. He will easily be ahead by the end of the week.

yes of course he is, we've seen that by the endless stream of crap that his 'talent' shows have churned out and got to no.1 thanks to the x factor-loving kids who have bought it. but if he's allowed to 'artificially' increase sales of a single as you say, why can't others? sadly there's no other realistic way of beating x factor to christmas no.1.

so why did you say no before?

i didn't say others couldn't, but doesn't it strike you as ironic and hypocritical?

i don't think someone buying Jo's single is any worse than someone buying the RATM song.

in fact, its even not as bad, because Cowell hasn't actually set up a Facebook group telling people to buy it.

I would love to find out that Cowell is behind the RATM release.

what the hell's your problem with me? you asked if it's in 'protest of anyone artificially increasing sales of a single', and i replied that it's not just because of that, but because everyone is sick of x factor getting christmas no.1 every year with their cheap and soulless covers. don't take every word i say so literally.

why do you take it so seriously? why don't you go and complain to the people who started the facebook group instead of someone like me who's not even on facebook and hasn't bought the RATM song. i just think many people are fed up of x factor getting christmas no.1 every year and would like a change - whatever way possible. things like the current campaign are the only realistic way of doing that.

I don't want either of them to get to number one.
I want a decent, new song released this week to take that place, although as long as X factor is around it'll be a ridiculously bland cover version or a protest song like RATM every year. I feel bad for the artists choosing to release their new material this week.

i don't have a problem with you.

i thought this was a discussion forum where, you know, people discussed things.

you asked if it's in 'protest of anyone artificially increasing sales of a single', and i replied that it's not just because of that, but because everyone is sick of x factor getting christmas no.1 every year with their cheap and soulless covers. don't take every word i say so literally.
well, you replied 'no', but hey.

why do you take it so seriously? why don't you go and complain to the people who started the facebook group instead of someone like me who's not even on facebook and hasn't bought the RATM song. i just think many people are fed up of x factor getting christmas no.1 every year and would like a change - whatever way possible. things like the current campaign are the only realistic way of doing that.
again, i thought this was a discussion forum.

the issue i have is with all this cobblers about how people that watch TXF are morons, and can't possibly have any interest in music beyond TXF.

i don't really see the big deal with it being number 1, and to be honest its probably a bit more Christmassy than flippin' RATM.
