I don't think I've ever heard about other countries having such a hype over a No 1 at Christmas. Even America's Billboard Chart. How does the Christmas charts grip this country. It's the same with TV too buy having bog shows at Chirstmas time.

With other countries, Is there any other seasonal charts that interest them?

In America I dont think its possible for Christmas songs to re-enter the Billboard Hot 100, so even if they do get the same exposure (im not sure if they do or not), I dont think we'd hear much about it anyway.

I'd clarify that it's only a handful of sadsacks in the UK that care deeply.

yep, with you there. The charts were exciting when I was a kid, as there was almost no music on tele, no cable/sat either. Sunday, 4pm (?) the top 40. That was what the week was about when I was 10.

It's all (and always has been) a big commercial really. If you want good music head out to the clubs and bars and find it. Read the music magazines. Forget about the "pop" charts. Shouldn't be called pop music, should be called greed music.

Mistype error. It's 'top shows' really although some are kind of 'bog'.

Woahh...let's cut out the music snobbery.

Pop music is so called because it is POPULAR amongst the people, it is bought by many so it attains a high chart position as a result. It should be noted many, even most, pop singers worked hard for the success - it's not as though they've had it handed to them easily.

I don't think it's a case of being a "handful of sad sacks" at all, it had became (or it had pre-Cowell) a sort of Christmas tradition in the UK, to bag the #1 and it used to be hotly contested until Cowell came along with X-Factor and it's fading out now with hardly anyone releasing that week now.

If we care about a Christmas No 1, What about a New Year No 1? Next week would be the last of the 2000s.

Oh! and for US no 1 for Christmas , Jay Z and Alisha Keys have got it with Empire State of Mind"

Christmas 2003 was a bit weird
the No 1 was .... Mad World....
great song .. but very sad and lonely !

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles

It's a very, very
Mad World
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

Posh released the week after Christmas, in a very slow selling week and still failed to reach number one, bankrupting the record company in the process!

While a lot is made of the 'battles' of the past, I struggle to remember many; Westlife vs Bob the Builder, and The Darkness vs Mad World are two I can think of off hand. Was there really any more competition the 3 years that the Spice Girls topped the charts? Maybe it was a bigger deal, but it's hard to see who we'd expect to put out a single now... Girls Aloud? The Saturdays? McFly? Cliff?

Posh's song was called 'Let Your Head Go'. So classic that people actually remember the name of it, eh? Don't get me wrong, I like her but her solo career was handled in the worst possible way.

As for chart battles in recent years - the Spice Girls' '2 Become 1' in 1996 had competition from 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' which was a charity release for those affected by the Dunblane tragedy. In 1997, they managed to keep the Teletubbies off the top and I don't recall much of a competition in 1998. 1999 saw Cliff vs Westlife - Cliff managed to get No.1 the week before though - his last so far. He's also failed to reach it in this decade meaning he's failed to produce a No.1 in five consecutive decades.

It was Westlife vs Bob the Builder in 2000. That was a pretty rough year - the competition was bad on both sides! 2001 was Robbie & Nicole Kidman. I don't recall who their competition was that year. 2002 was the Popstars: The Rivals battle - Girls Aloud beating those One True Flops. 2003 saw The Darkness vs Gary Jules. IMO, the last year a decent Xmas song was released by The Darkness. Also the last year the UK saw it's last real chart battle as Band Aid 20 in 2004 was a gaurantee and the X Factor doing it for the next 4 years.

If it charted on 3rd Jan 2004, then it was released after Christmas and wasn't in the running for the Xmas No.1.

In fact, it was reported at the time that the record company decided on that week as it was known to be one the quietest weeks of single sales of the year and she was the only big name releasing anything that week - therefore hoping she would be finally able to get herself to the top as a solo artist.

Didn't work and she could only manage 3.

As for the song itself, many would argue that yes, perhaps it is her best solo single. But many people think that all her singles were actually the worst songs on her albums. Her first album has a R&B/Pop sound but her second, the one that never even got released commerically, is a more dance/pop sound. It was called 'Open Your Eyes' - if you can find it then I'd recommend it. It's out there you just have to.... 'Open Your Eyes'....

quote
Beckham's first single with Telstar Records, "Let Your Head Go / This Groove",[ was released in the UK on 29 December 2003, following heavy promotion and many TV appearances across the Christmas period with the video being directed by Andy Hylton (http://www.andyhylton.com) The single charted at number 3 in the UK
end quote

Im sure it was on the radio big time in
December 2003
does that mean you could nt buy it till
29th dec ? I dont get the logic

Looks like Posh had more success with the
pen
quote
Learning to Fly became the third best-selling non-fiction title of 2001 and the total UK sales stand at more than 500,000 copies.

You have to remember that in 2003 there weren't (legal) downloads, so songs were promoted before the release, whereas now it kind of overlaps to a greater degree
