Hmmm....Dr Who might just do it, being David Tennants final story etc...

Be interesting to see what ratings Doctor Who gets on New Years Day....should be very high I would imagine - maybe higher than Christmas Day?

You could well be right

Bit puzzled why EE is favorite, since DW got rather higher figures than it did on xmas day last year...and the year before that on final ratings.

Maybe it viewers on teh day and DW pulls in more when 'record now / watch later' figures are added.

no, last year DW had higher over nights than EE did, as my post states. The prior year EE had slightly higher overnights, but ended up with less in the offical ratings.

The odds are it'll be the New Year's Day episode that pulls the biggest ratings, one would think, so maybe that's it?

Or one could suggest the bookies suspect Who will do better, but by giving better odds on EE the casual punter will put their money on the horse most likely to come second. But if EE did come first, they's have less to pay out.

But that would be a cynical thing to suggest.

I also wouldn't rule out G&S making a strong impact too - like Tennant Who that's been a growing series with lots of hype and it's coming to an end.

Not likely to be tops, but one of the top three BBC shows I think. Either that or RF.

Its probably to do with what is going to happen in Eastenders on xmas day for the reason it being favourite.

Bizarrely, the G&S dvd has been out for a couple of weeks already after only a couple of the six episodes had aired. I can understand them wanting to get it out for the Christmas market, but to then make it the centrepiece of the Christmas tv schedule is odd.

I don't watch EastEnders but even I've heard about what's going to happen on Christmas Day in that show. It's getting a lot of publicity and the BBC are making a big deal of it. Far more than they did last year.

In contrast, Doctor Who is getting far less attention than I expected. By now I thought we'd be drowning in Doctor Who hype and we aren't. There's stuff happening of course. David Tennant seems to be everywhere but he's not really publicising the show, he's just being himself (Buzzcocks aside). At least in the things I've seen him in. If anything, I was more aware of Doctor Who last Christmas. Seems slightly odd but there you go.

Now if the regeneration was happening on Christmas Day then I'd say Doctor Who would beat EastEnders. But it's not. Most people know it's his second to last episode and whilst it won't hurt the ratings, I don't think it'll get the boost that a regeneration would give. A regeneration on New Years Day.. it's far less of a captive audience than Christmas Day. It'll still do well but not as well as it would have done on Doctor Who.

At least that's my guess, but we'll see in the next few weeks.

Well, I would say it's quite a reasonably captive audience on New Years Day..... the night before..... well, maybe not (!), although having said this, I certainly don't think as many people go out New Years Eve as they used to (I don't! Don't agree with paying a fortune to enter my local pub!!!!)

Anyway, I am sure we'll have more hype/trailers etc for the NYD episode immediately after Christmas.....

I'm a tad disappointed that there is a week between episode 1 & 2 so I'll Sky+ Ep1 then watch it just before Ep2 on NYD so I can watch them without a break of a week which I think is too long.

DW has had a lot more publicity than any programme this christmas on any channel by a long shot.

whichever programme gets the higher viewing figure the BBC still wins.

May I just say, "What an extraordinarily silly thing to bet on!"?

Don't get me wrong, I can understand why people are interested in who wins, but it doesn't seem to me like something people could predict well enough to risk money on.
