Turning off my new LCD by the mains
Hey guys, Yesterday I bought a new 22" Hitachi LCD TV for my bedroom. It is fantastic, however it does not have an off switch only standby. Usually this wouldnt bother me much but whenever I put the TV into standby a high pitch noise starts which I don't seem to get with other LCD's in the house. Could it be maybe because the TV is new? The noise isn't very loud, Ibut the fact that the other TV's do not do it bothers me a bit.
I was just wondering whether it would be okay to turn the TV off from the mains every night? or would this damage the LCD TV and my Computer (as they are plugged in using an extension lead) Also, is it normal for LCD's to make noises when in standby? Thanks

If it's making a noise on standbye I'd return it as faulty.

I seem to recall this was a common fault with Hitachis but it was a couple of years ago now. Best bet is take it back as faulty.

What kind of noise?!

Yeah its a buzzing noise, Ive googled Buzzing Noise LCD and it seems some people get the same problem but im not sure whether it means the TV is faulty? Its Hitachi which I considered to be a good brand. The noise doesnt occur when the TV is on, just when its in standby.

I take it the next noise will be the sound of a hammer???
![]() Get yourself a good quality CRT type...more reliable than branded clones. What people see in todays TV's I don't know. |

But something that is turned off is not going to fail for lack of electricity. More likely to fail because it is switched on. Quote:

That does sound like a fault. So get it checked over. If it is a buzzing noise then there could be a component in the power supply about to give up on you Worse case is something is arcing inside (ie generating lots of little sparks) in the wrong circumstances that could be very dodgy. |

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I'll be returning this one. This is the model incase anyone was wondering or looking at getting a new TV http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st...&Submit=GO+%3E
I was thinking to replace it with this one, any thoughts? my price range is up to £250, not too fussed about it not having a DVD player as I will be buying a Blu Ray player after christmas. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...BUSH+22+HD.htm Thanks

If it were my wallet I was emptying then I would go for either...

Not so sure I'd got to Argos either but that's your choice. ![]() Hmm Links work if you copy and paste into a browser but DS won't convert them to clickable ones for some reason. OK Nigel, I did actually think that as I was posting. But clicked reply without Googling.
Regarding CRTs, we got a hand me down wide-screen Panasonic when friend upgraded to LCD. I think it is 4 or 5 years old. It does seem/look dated. But the picture quality is superb. Better than most LCDs/.Plasmas. Better than OLEDS? I dunno, I dont have one to compare in the house. Of course Sony Trinitron screens were the old "Gold" standard weren't they? |

I think Hitachi are more into their Heavy Engineering rather then consumer goods these days

Will box the TV up tomorrow, have everything except the white foam blocks which im sure they can live without. Unfortunetly the Samsung model is out of stock but they do have a couple of the LG 22 inch models, it lacks a built in dvd player and is £50 more but I'd rather pay that and ensure that I receive a better quality product by a better quality brand name.
Fingers crossed they just return it with no problems, Argos have been very picky in the past. Thanks for the replies guys

its a hunk of junk, anything that whines like that when off needs to go back.
and yea the hitachis i've seen in stores look like rebadged junk, you gotta be careful with brands these days, sometimes they are just whored out or bought off defunct companies |

Neighbours are on third LCD in a couple of years. CRTs are big and heavy but they go on and on like Duracell Bunnies.
Keep it up Andy lol |
