And Davros

GRRRR!

According to Wikipedia, Raymond Cusick is also a candidate.

Both Davros and Terry Nation are correct answers since the question wasn't phrased properly so the panel would know if they meant the species in a fictional universe or the characters on a real TV show.

If I remember correctly, DT marked a pause before saying that the answer was correct and he checked his card. Something that he shouldn't need to do, unless if he wanted to check that Davros was an acceptable answer.

Its a comedy quiz show. This registers below zilch on the give-a-damn scale.

Raymond P Cusick designed the daleks, Terry Nation wrote the script. Sadly for Cusick, the contract he had with the BBC said they owned the copyright on anything he designed, so he didn't get much out of it, while Nation got millions.

I feel sure that if Terry Nation were alive he would only be too happy for it to be considered that Davros created the Daleks. Simply because the story in which he did it (of course Genesis of...) is timeless and a classic and he would take great pleasure in that alone

I actually expected DT to say "incorrect!" for whichever answer they gave, and then cite the other as the correct answer, but he didn't shame

Terry Nation kept everything for himself, and still does from beyond the grave! Daleks, Blake's Seven, Survivors ...

I remember, back in the 90s, Jon Pertwee was a guest on Ann and Nick's morning show, drawing the winner of a competition that asked that question. I don't remember which answer Ann & Nick were expecting as the correct one, but Pertwee was loudly outspoken on the topic. Various answers were given (Nation / Davros / Cusick), and it got very funny and very outspoken. I think that clip is included on the "30 years In the Tardis" documentary that was released on video a few years back ...

Do you recall which answer(s) he considered acceptable?

Having looked again at the title of this thread, I'm worried we may be sleepwalking into an Abbott and Costello sketch.

Terry lived in the USA for the last years of his life and got some pretty smart Lawyers to tie up his intellectual property rights.

Unfortunately they are pretty paranoid about making money from them.

It's hard to make money from them since he owns the characters and name, but not the design. A Dalek that doesn't look anything like a Dalek and doesn't interact with the Doctor or any other part of the Whoniverse, really isn't that valuable a property in my opinion.

It's not Andy who says that. It's the show itself.

And thus did Urban Bassman's prediction come to pass.

I think part of it might be the singular versus the plural. Davros created the Dalek, the thing, but not all the Daleks. Nation created all the Daleks in the literary sense. I think I'm probably relying on some sort of concept of foreseeability in that one.

Further alternative answers, thanks to Wikipedia.: Peter Hawkins, David Graham, Robert Jewell, Kevin Manser, Michael Summerton, Gerald Taylor, Peter Murph. The basis being that actors use 'created' to me 'originated the role'.

I didn't think it got outspoken particularly. Pertwee just queried whether Nation was actually the creator of the Daleks and mentioned that someone else had designed the creature. There was no argument or anything like that, and Anne and Nick obviously didn't have a clue except that they had been told the answer was Terry Nation.

Nation always wanted to make a spin-off of Doctor featuring Daleks but it never got off the ground.

Russell T Davies of course! The man's a creative genius.

The design of the Daleks is actually the weakest bit of the concept, the personality and back story are the main part that makes the Daleks the Daleks.

Since the Daleks first appeared when Russell was less than a year old, I don't think he can be credited with creating the Daleks, even if he is a genius.

I think that's completely wrong. The design of the Daleks was a brilliant design if ever there was one. They are instantly recognisable and made an immediate impression when they first appeared in the series. The back story only came later.
