You will need to unlock via a cable.

Just curious, would a full format remove the 5 attempts?

I know the normal format / reset wouldn't, but there is another format on this phone that reformats and resets absoloutely everything on the phone. It's a hidden feature but I have the details somewhere.

To format key in *#7370#, and you'll be prompted for your secuirty code (Default is 12345). The phone will reboot (this may take up to 10 minutes) and you will lose everything not stored on the memory card. It's advisable to backup first (Menu > Extras > Memory > Backup) so you don't lose your contacts or anything else you have installed to phone memory.

I'm not sure whether this will fix the unlocking problem though, but it's worth a go.

There's another method that aparantly does a deeper format than that, but I am still trying to find the details.

Found it again, do as follows:

With the handset off press and hold Talk (the Green action key on the left) + the number 3 on the keypad + the * key. Then, while keeeping all those fingers in place, turn the handset back on.
The phone will start up. Keep holding those keys down until the "Formatting" dialog appears. You'll see the background screen act as a progress bar as you watch your 6600 format your worries away.

Once complete the 6600 will be as new.

Aparantly this is a deeper format than the one in the post above, but as I don't have a 6600 I haven't tried it. Let me know if it works?

(as usual, no warranties with this information. Use it at your own risk etc.)

Well running a 3650/6600 forum with 12,000 members I've never come across *#7370# not working. When I've used that code it's always worked as it should, and fully restores the phone. It wipes the phone's user memory (C:) and replaces it with a completely fresh copy from the ROM (Z:). What else can be done?

I'm not sure what it does extra, but I came across that method while looking in to reformatting a phone for someone. They resolved their issue before I got those details for them, but I kept them for this sort of thing.

The site I got them from suggested that the above format method I mentioned does a deeper level format than the method you mention.

I am not saying your method doesn't work, but the site I visited suggests that the method you suggest does less than the oen they have listed.

I doubt to be honest that a standard format would remove the security attempts to remove sim locks, but I was curious if the other method would.

I think the best thing to do is have our friend with the locked out phone give it a go (at his own risk) and report back to us.

Well it'll be very interesting if it does work...

Our office contract phones just got updated and most people went for the 6600 this time, but strangely enough no one will let me test out the key combination.

I'm not on the office mobile system as I have my own contract with Three and a 7600 (just upgraded courtousy of Threepay) so I can't even test it myself.

Does anyone know anything about these £20 nokia 6600 that are supposedly available through a link that you have to purchase from ebay? Surely it's a con? I want a 6600, but as a poor student can't afford at the moment!

They are a con, don't go near it!
(they also clutter up the decent ads on Ebay, something I wish Ebay would do something about.)

On another note, don't hijack people's posts like that, start your own post with a decent title and people will reply.
(welcome to DS by the way)

I did - admittedly on my mates phone - but it appears to do absolutely nothing, nada, nichts.

Ah well eh?

I will report this to the 6600 site that I got it off. They seem to think themselves experts and ths sort of says other wise...

If, as Pingu says, the combination code just formats the LFFS (C: drive), then I very much doubt this will affect the lock. I should think this information is stored elsewhere in the flash, away from the area reserved for the LFFS and where the user can't get at it. Same place as the IMEI maybe.

Just a quick note on this subject. Make sure the battery is fully charged or the phone is plugged into the charger when you are formatting. I had an unfortunate incident with a 7650 last year when the battery died half way through a format and rendered the phone unusable until I got it reflashed at a repair shop.

Take a look at the 7600. May not be everyone's cup of tea but most of the people in our office that have the 6600 wish they'd got the 7600 instead.

Err...why? No MMC slot, making the MP3 player/video capability limited at best, smaller res screen. Is it even Series 60?
I've not played with one yet, so please try to convince me!!
And as for the shape.......

Still, if you don't mind the 7600 keypad, then just get an SX1

I don't know why, maybe they just like it?

I didn't ask them why, just enjoyed having a phone that people wanted when the majority of them took the office contract's standard issue 6600.

I prefer the shape and look of the 7600, so maybe they do and I don't know of anyone in my office that uses their phoen for MP3 playback other than as ringtones.

As I said, it's not everyone's cup of tea, this probably includes you. But it doesn't stop those people in my office wanting one. And to add to this my brothers GF saw it last night and she also wants one.

They are a nice phone and if you can accept phones can be any shape then you're fine. It's something different and as a phone it's great with nice features too. Just worth looking at...

I certainly wouldn't want to swap my 6600 for a 7600
