While i sympathise with those who do not want cowell "ruining" the charts at Christmas time I am appalled at the choice of "song" to try defeat Joe to the top spot.

why couldnt theye choose a Christmas song - it would have served the same purpose and probably have been a more widely popular choice.

i do NOT want my kids singing "f** you i wont do what you tell me at any time of year, especially Christmas Day"

I will NOT do want a small group of degenerates tell me!

the reason that song was chosen was because its essentially a F U to Simon Cowell and his X Factor Steam Roller

yes a christmas song would have been a great idea, perhaps if the thing works then the Record Execs will get some proper Christmas Songs re released or new ones for next year, and we will get the fight for Christmas Number One once again, not just the forgone conclusion come January 1st that The X Factor will be No 1 at Christmas next year

and i slightly resent the fact that you see us as Degenerates

I don't like the song but I support what it stands for. At least something is getting done to get the xmas No1 back to what it used to be. Who knows, maybe next year we WILL have a proper xmas song at No1 thanks to RATM?

It's not sick. It has a few obscenities at the end, but the song is in protest against constitutional racism.

They should have gone with Gary Glitter's "Another Rock and Roll Christmas" instead.
That's a nice song for this time of year.

I know the song was probably chosen largely because of the "I won't do what you tell me" section, but it was also chosen because it's a genuine artistic endeavour and not simply a glorified marketing exercise. Choosing some Christmas fluff wouldn't have achieved the same thing.

It's not to everyone's tastes, of course, but it's regarded as a classic by some sections of society. I grew up listening to it, most of my friends grew up listening to it (none of us are hippies, revolutionaries or anything like it) and you'll find it on many lists of the best rock songs/best guitar riffs compiled in the past 20 years. It may have completely bypassed mainstream public opinion in this country, but for those who grew up in the 90s listening to this type of music it's easy to draw comparisons with what bands like the Clash and the Smiths were to previous generations. It's not an unusual choice when you consider the age-groups that are largely involved in this campaign, in fact it has about as broad an appeal amongst this section of society as you could wish for.

Years when a Christmassy song has been number one:
1957, 1958, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1984, 1988, 2004

Years when a Christmassy song hasn't been number one:
Every year from 1952 - 2008 I haven't listed above...

but in every year up to 2005 there was a race to win it,every year from then onwards its been X Factor or nothing

4 years is long enough, time for the tradtional race to come back

and in the majority, there was a lot of novelty records released and got to Number One as well

Degenerates, just because they didn't buy Joe's song?

What a strange and insulting conclusion to jump to, over such a silly thing.

There's nothing like pre-judging a few hundred thousand people based on nothing more than a song choice

Even I haven't judged those buying the x-factor song- it's up to them. Maybe you should have some maturity and try doing the same

East 17 in 1994 counts as a Christmas song, surely? They've got the bells and the ridiculous big winter coats on that make them look like ghetto Inuits.

So they'd count as Christmas songs in that case, right? They're always on those compilations at least. Outside the ones you mention, I'd class 1989 (live aid again), 1990 (saviours days) and 1994 (East 17) as having at least a Christmas feel.

I thought Milennium Prayer was a Christmas no.1 too, but apparently not according to Wiki. It was still no.1 though, wasn't it?

1987 saw probably the best Christmas no.1 in my lifetime for my money.

I'd rather have RATM as number one than X F*ctor. No offence to young Joe, he seems a nice lad, but surely even getting as far as number 2 should be good enough for him - it is his first single after all.

no millenium prayer was number one the week before,it got knocked off by Westlife's version of I have a Dream/Seasons in the Sun

Oof. Talk about jumping out the frying pan into the fire!

I think the last time I bought a single that was a contender for Christmas no.1 was the Death in Vegas track, around 2002/3. Not sure it even made the top 10 in the end.
