Shaky topped the charts on Christmas Eve 1985. The chart rundown was at lunchtime with Gary Davies IIRC.

As the charts now include downloads which can change the charts, why don't we have a chart countdown on chirstmas eve? Then we would have the true christmas no1, this could become a tradition in years to come.

It has as much to do with Christmas as Bohemian Rhapsody, which has been Christmas number 1 twice! Personally I don’t like any Christmas number 1s being non-Christmas songs, but I am happy to make this one exception if it will finally put an end to the X Factor ruining the tradition of people competing for the Christmas number one, and having original Christmas songs take the top spot. However, “Killing In The Name” was a terrible choice of song because it’s on Simon Cowell’s label and it will only make Simon richer. He’s not going to take it as an insult at all. If you want to protest against the mainstream music industry, you choose a song on an indie label. I think an alternative Christmas song could have worked just as well, anyway. There are dozens of really great Christmas songs by alternative bands and comedy acts. I might have nominated something like “Dead, Dead, Dead” from the South Park Christmas CD. Quote:

While i sympathise with those who do not want cowell "ruining" the charts at Christmas time I am appalled at the choice of "song" to try defeat Joe to the top spot.
why couldnt theye choose a Christmas song - it would have served the same purpose and probably have been a more widely popular choice. i do NOT want my kids singing "f** you i wont do what you tell me at any time of year, especially Christmas Day" I will NOT do want a small group of degenerates tell me! ![]() You're not a member of the BNP are you? |

Kicking over tables? Going a bit 'mental in the temple' as my old (rather bombastic, and incredibley policitally incorrect) Sunday School teacher said?
Still, everyone has an off day! |

Still, everyone has an off day! Jesus was angry about injustice, but he never treated anyone disrespectfully. If Jesus was writing music, he would be writing protest songs, but never offensive songs. |

In the last 30 years there have been only 5 christmas themed #1's and 3 of those have been different versions of the same song (Do They Know It's Christmas) |

i did buy the song, and must agree it isnt the best of choices to be remembered as the xmas number 1!!! but at the same time - i am sick to the back teeth of the shit factor being the top spot all the time. i actually believed that the X factor will take the xmas no1 away from us forever - however - it just shows you what it takes to stop - literally - a rage against the xfactor machine.
there is talk on the FB group about The Pogues&Kirsty Mccall would be a great choice for next year. especially as that would be 10 years since Kirsty's death. The only problem is next year - there will be so many campaigns started by so many at once - it may be a disaster and have no point - as there will be so many choices which would result in a fail and the Shit Factor getting in. |

Well, one good thing has come from this campaign. People may finally fight against the idea of becoming mindless, manipulated drones.

I don't know where people's children are hearing this song. It's censored when on TV and radio (with the exception of a recent live version which was quickly faded out anyway).
I hope this is a start to a campaign every year now. It just might get flooded, though. People will begin to choose different songs and not enough will choose the same one. |

the reason that song was chosen was because its essentially a F U to Simon Cowell and his X Factor Steam Roller

Joe McElderry's song is pretty terrible. It has nothing to do with Joe himself as it was obviously picked for him.
RATM's song is also pretty terrible, but in a different way, swearing, and to put it mildly, hardly a tune at all. It actually says more about the charts themselves that people could have a dispute over the No1 slot with two such dire songs. Do people actually care whether or not music lasts because neither of these songs will. |

I think it was a brilliant idea to choose this particular song (and obviously many people agreed).
Not everybody enjoys the same music or finds the same things offensive, or has the same sense of humour for that matter. I find the whole thing incredibly amusing, don't think the song is offensive at all, and actually find other stuff in the charts these days much more offensive than RATM could ever be. It is probably not the band's best song, but it has a great energy to it that is perfect for making the intended statement. Anyway, I understand that lots of people are unhappy with this song being at the top of the charts, but they will probably just have to deal with it, just as I (and plenty of others) deal with the fact that the charts are usually dominated by music we hate. Let us enjoy some time at the top, it's not as if it happens every day, Jesus! |

I'm not too fussed on RATM, but I'm more than sure that the idea of this protest is to simply get rid of the X Factor.
