Here is something radical...

A CHRISTMAS song for CHRISTMAS number 1!

Something with a tune.

That's why I object to X Factor hogging the Xmas number 1. Apart from Hallelujah, every song has been totally forgettable and completely tuneless.

I'd love to see Dead End by Inflames Ft Lisa Mikovsky get a number one. Love the song

Not christmas like at all really but

Pink Floyd's 'Have A Cigar':

Come in here, Dear boy, have a cigar.
You're gonna go far,
You're gonna fly high,
You're never gonna die,
You're gonna make it, if you try;
They're gonna love you.
Well I've always had a deep respect,
And I mean that most sincere.
The band is just fantastic,
that is really what I think.
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

And did we tell you the name of the game, boy?
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.

We're just knocked out.
We heard about the sell-out.
You gotta get an album out.
You owe it to the people.
We're so happy we can hardly count.
Everybody else is just green,
Have you seen the chart?
It's a hell of a start,
It could be made into a monster
If we all pull together as a team.

And did we tell you the name of the game, boy?
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.

There's already an alternative... didn't make it this year, but who knows?

I second this!

And failing that Gives You Hell by The All-American Rejects, Bodyform or Simon Cowell's supposed version of Ice Ice Baby!

Actually, I think John & Edward's debut single should get it. It'll probably get released abouts November time, and it will remain at number one for weeks and weeks and not even next years winner, Ethan Boroian (I hope) will not be able to knock them off the top spot with his cover of another Hannah Montana classic - The Hoedown Throwdown.

Yes! I love that song and it has the bonus of actually being Christmassy!!

Failing that, anything by Rammstein. Sonne or Ich Will especially would be nice.

Stan by Eminem. Gloomy song, but Bob the Builder robbed it of being the Xmas 2000 #1 so maybe it should be given another chance

Maybe a song that's not on the same record company? Cowell's record label, Syco, is a subsidiary of Sony Music, the same corporation that holds the rights to Killing in the Name.

Then we'd have truly meaningful competition for places again.

Something Christmassy. what about Wizzard or the Shakin Stevens? I know theyre already hammered to death at this time of year but it gives true meaning to the christmas spirit.

I'd either say next year, let's have true people power and get an unsigned band to number one.

How about a British rock supergroup forming- Muse, Stones, McCartney, Lostprophets, Brian May, even the Quo! A remake of a classic- a harder version of Fairytale of New York?

I think the reason RATM did so well was a combination of the message in the name of the band and the lyrics of the song and what they stand for. They are anti-establishment, campaign for moral, right-on issues like anti-capitalism, anti-racism and fascism, and are a real grass roots, genuine band. That is why they captured the imagination of so many people of all ages, races and backgrounds.

They were the perfect anti-X Factor band, and it was the perfect anti-X Factor song.

In order to replicate this next year, a similarly perfect X Factor antidote would have to be chosen. I mean, I wouldn’t buy Wham or anything like that – it’s almost as bad as the X Factor and has been done before.

I also think that the choice of X Factor song this year - insipid, boring, uninspiring and dull, coupled with a guy you couldn’t pick out of a crowd singing it - was another reason it was beaten to the top spot. You couldn’t have done it with Alexandra Burke or Leona Lewis.
