Great, the flock of sheep who snapped up Joe's dismal record to make him Christmas no1 have been thwarted! ...by a flock of sheep who snapped up another dismal record to make another rubbish act Christmas no1...

what's the moral of this story again? People are just complete idiots?

I can picture Cowell sitting with his white cat on his lap, slating his aides before dispatching one of them into a pool of pirhana.

Is this the first number one where most of the buyers did not actually want the song?

This is the problem I have with this farce. Love them or loathe them, people who buy the x-factor songs buy them because they want them, whereas most people who bought the Rage song only brought it out of protest. They the ones who have caused more harm to the charts because it is no longer the song people enjoy most.

RATM are donating all proceeds to charity.

Cowell, will you do the same?

I'm a RATM fan, but i'm not sure if i'm actually happy about this or not as i don't know which which i hate more; Facebook or X-Factor. I also get a slight feeling that they've both contributed to bastardising one of my favourite bands.

Hey, don't dislike something because it became big. RATM haven't changed.

If anything this campaign has opened up RATM to a new generation.

While I'm as skeptical as the next man about the fact that RATM are also on Sony, I do love the song, and it's great to have a Christmas No 1 that doesn't slowly, year by year, make my soul a little bit smaller and more grumpy.

Didn't buy it, mind you- wasn't THAT bothered, and I already bought the album on vinyl and then on CD, and they ain't getting my money THREE times.
Same here. I have the album on CD and haven't listen to it for years! Damned if I was going to buy it again and be some pawn even though it is quite funny that Cowell has to take back all his ' I killed any competition' remarks from last week!

It's OK. It'll only get played to death for one month a year. And it wasn't their best song anyway.

I reckon Sony have been dead clever here. Mind you, since their management are now apparently now all living in boxes under the Hammersmith bridge due to all us naughty file-sharers (or so they'd have us believe) I can only be impressed by their ingenuity.

Just this once, in the season of goodwill, both me AND the record industry can be happy at the same time. It's quite beautiful, really.

Excellent. I'm not a Rage fan and frankly find them crap but bought the single anyway to make a point. I would have rather seen a good Christmas song up there but as long as the X factor gets trounced anything good.

What Cowell has done for the music, musicians and the industry is wrong. Loads of kids have a deluded idea that they can all become famous. Proper song writing and musical talent is lost.

So F- you Cowell. As long as there's a cute girly boy with straight teeth and not much else banging out pre-written factory songs this backlash will keep happening.

Really? That's awesome.

It's rare you see a band who still walk the walk. I went to see New Model Army the other night- I was on the press guest list, but the band were insisting everyone on the guest list make a minimum three quid donation to Shelter, which I thought was brilliant. At least that way us freeloaders are doing something good! (Mind you, I then spent thirty quid on the merch stall, so the band did okay out of me as well!)

I bet tonnes of x factor singles every year are bought as unwanted Christmas presents by the unimaginative.

Anyway, I don't care about 'harming' the charts. The singles charts have been a joke for years, it's just nice to see the smug grin wiped off Cowell's face.

RATM have already been big, in fact massive, for many years, so that doesn't make much sense. They weren't underground or little known before this.

The "bastardising" doesn't have much to do with their popularity.

I get to go to quite a lot of free gigs through friends in the press and another who is a roadie for a pretty big band and it's quite common to be asked for a charitable donation if you're on the guest list which I'm always happy to put my hand in my pocket for.

Bastardising would imply that the song was changed for some reason since it wasn't I don't understand the use of the word.

Really? I get a lot of freebies, and it's the first time I've seen it happen... I'm glad it's common, though. Maybe the bands I usually get freebies for are usually stingy. Wouldn't surprise me, actually; they're usually quite nasty. I was glad NMA did it, though. They're probably my favourite band ever, and it kind of reaffirmed my faith in them, if it had ever been flagging.

(In case anyone from their management is reading this- YES, MY REVIEW WAS VERY GOOD. FREE STUFF AGAIN, PLEASE. WILL MAKE DONATIONS).
