Even funnier when you think the facebook campaign used exactly the same tactics that Cowell uses.
What?
A massive tv show hyping it up for months before and a huge marketing budget?

What tactics exactly?

Using millions of pounds to brand a singer, utilising months worth of prime time Saturday & Sunday terrestrial telly?

Or just some folk with a computer and fifty pence sticking it to him.

There is no comparison in the 'tactics'.

One campaign was borne out of greed and personal power, the other borne of chart boredom, Christmas nostalgia, and collective power.

Pardon?

You are saying that all people who dislike Cowell enough to try to thwart his world domination are sheep?

Balls to that.

The sheep are the eejits who blindly watch Xfactor every week and then religiously buy the pointless, manufactured single every Christmas.

This was a victory for the non-sheep of the world and the only way it could have been done is by selecting one song and buying it en masse.

It's fantastic news for the charts and music.

Joe is bland.
But wait, aren't all people who bought the Rage song sheep aswell? After all they followed the rule of the facebook campaign and were successful. baaa baaa baaa SHEEP !

I have no love for Cowell but this is spiteful campaign started by some loser who probably has no talent and is probably bitter and twisted that they never will... And the rest of you suckers fall for it in the same way as you say say those "suckers" by X Factor singles.. LMFAO!! Lets hope we ahve a proper song at the top soon.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Simon Cowell hahaha.

Congrats to the Rage
It worked??

The British finally managed to rebel against the revolting, vomit-inducing Cowell factory?

Man, that is great - best Xmas song ever!

Was Joe ever entitled to the xmas number 1 spot?? No....

Did Joe spend months advertising his single... or leave it till the last week?

RAGE FOR THE WIN!

Do you understand how the charts work?
If people didn't band together (which is in the Christmas spirit after all) and pick one song then one of the blandest songs of the year would have made it Christmas number 1 yet again.
If helping to stop that makes me a sheep then baaa baaa to you

It is an absolutely disgusting noise and doesn't deserve to be No. 1, campaign or no campaign.
I feel sorry for you Joe and people that have paid for it.

All other issues aside, in what way is it not a "proper song"? I mean, it's proper to the point of being textbook! It has a verse/chorus/verse structure, a middle eight, it has someone singing it...

...what's not "proper" about that??? I mean, it's not like it's Stockhausen or something. It's not THAT challenging. It's clearly a "song"... where's the impropriety?

For goodness sake it's not about the bl00dy record label, it's simply about upsetting the stupid stranglehold Cowell and his X factor smiling clones have on our charts every year ad infinitum.

Good on RATM, I downloaded their track this week as my protest in favour of them and have always liked them anyway.

No offense to Joe, he seems a nice kid but why on earth should Cowell Corp. have an easy free ride to Number 1 every year? He thinks it's his godamn right does that man.

Well not this time twinkle, not this time.

The fact you, like so many others, seem to think the number 1 spot in the UK music chart is part of the prize and is the right of a winner of a glorified karaoke competition is probably why the campaign began in the first place.

He won X-Factor, he's got a recording contract. That's his prize. The Christmas number 1 spot isn't part of it. He and his fans can only be disappointed if they expected to be number 1, which is the whole crux of the matter.

29 pence at Amazon well spent.

Simon Cowell and the sugary pap Syco turns out year in year out don't have a god given right to be Christmas number 1.
The whole RATM campaign, done via the internet on download sales alone proves that music no matter how it sounds doesn't have to be mass produced pap that Cowell and Co continually churn out.

The squeals of 'no fair' from X Factor fans makes it all the more sweet somehow.

Happy Christmas, grab some turkey and a drink and mosh to RATM and just forget your troubles. You'll live.

I'm too old to mosh, but what the hell, brings back some great memories for me.

What I find bizarre is that all these X Factor fans who voted last week, watched the show and squealed with delight when Joe McElderry won haven't all bought his song.
19 million watched, 10 million voted and only sales of 450k (ish)

But then you could argue anything done in life is done on the orders or continuation of someone elses's influence. You draw the curtains every day because...you're told to!

You don't have to though.

This wasn't a sheep campaign, it was a revolution of the people who made CHOICE to go 'phuck you, Cowell!' and just for a change it worked.

Someday you'll understand the meaning of rebellion, and you'll be glad of it.

Haha!

Welcome to proper, zero X factor, zero bullshit, zero prefab, zero marketed, zero fake music!

Let's have Nirvana next year.

Up yours, Simon!

No it's not spiteful. People are sick and tired of the bloody x factor getting to to the top every single year. People wanted a change. It's got nothing to do with dashing a young mans hopes. He won the show, he got to number 2. He should be grateful. He's still done well.

His song isn't a proper song either, it's trash. Not because he's crap but it's an awful Miley Cyrus song. If you think that's good music then you need your lug holes cleaned.

The difference being, the Facebook sheep did it consciously and purposefully with a specific aim to counteract the X-Factor sheep.

This was never about Joe just as last years campaign wasn't about Alexandra.

Sure, the wee guy has had his dreams trashed but that is what happens to real musicians when they are trying to make it.

It's ridiculous that the winners expect a number one anyway when every other band/artist worth their salt learns their instrument, plays dirty pubs and clubs, pawns their flute etc on their way up.

The music business is a struggle for everyone.

also do not like the song. kinda feel sorry for joe mcelderry as he's been caught in the middle of a vendetta against simon cowell, but he's just won a £1 million record contract so i don't think in the long run any tears will be shed.

makes me wonder if this was all dreamt up by some smart alec within the business who decided to stir up a stale yearly tradition and make the charts matter again by firing up the imagination and the spirits of all those who don't like x factor.

personally i don't care who is number one. i stopped paying attention to the charts when an arty farty song called 'mad world' beat darkness to christmas number one. in an ideal world i'd prefer an actual christmas song, like the george michael song, but that's not going to happen. same with peter kay's song last year.
