Wasn't Mr Blobby number 1 in 92 or 93?
The only reason it has upset me, is that people are mistakenly thinking people actually bought RATM because they liked it. The whole point of being number 1 is that people buy it because of that. People ended up buying either song to spite the other. Sticking one to Cowell is the icing on the cake but I wouldn't have bought it had I not liked the band and the song. |

I think you're mistaken if you think nobody that bought RATM likes the song. I did and I've loved the song for years.
Sticking one to Cowell is the icing on the cake but I wouldn't have bought it had I not liked the band and the song. The most manipulated chart battle ever. The only true winners were Sony. I guess RATM had a bit of chart success too, which they never really had before. Kind of hollow though when people were buying the song for other reasons. Its a shame that Killing in the name will be remembered for one thing, and thats stopping the X Factor. This time next year they will be forgotten, just like Joe and just like they were for the past 17 years. |

There is no prospect of denting the multi, multi million funded, corporate Cowel megalopoly without organisation. The saccharine teenager had the benefit of wall-to-wall TV coverage, tabloid media frenzy and blanket playlisting by the mindnumbingly bland commercial radio stations all over the country. If the boy had an the merest molecule of musical passion he'd have told Cowell that such a dire song was a no-no. Wonder what the retort would have been? To call the un-funded, grass roots organic movement of alternative music lovers "manipulation" is just sour grapes. KITNO isn't my fave track of all time- and it was the first RATM song I'd ever bought, but it's original and inventive and has the perfect message for Cowell. And not everyone wants fake jingle bells at Christmas. Best Christmas present I could have wished for. |

Is this really true though? No one know how many people voted for X-Factor, all we know is how many votes they received, but the two aren't the same.
I'm in no doubt, in fact I'm almost convinced, that 60% of x-Factor's votes are duplicate votes (people ringing more than once). The general election however can only give one vote per person. For example, 20m votes were cast in the final. So at least 10.1m of them must have been for Joe and yet he only sold 450,000 copies. That's because people will happily ring in 3 or 4 times to vote but will only buy one CD. So I would say only 450k "voted" for Joe whereas far more people turn out for elections. Trust me, X-Factor does not get anywhere near 20m invidual, unique votes. That said, even if you could vote more than once, can you think of ANY politician in this country that you'd WANT to vote for? It's the "buzz", the "fervour" that American politics has, and which we ascribe to the X-Factor in this country, that is missing from British politics, which is largely why few people are even remotely interested in it, and I can't say I blame them! When it came to the purchase of the song though, I may (I genuinely don't know) have inadvertently "bought" Joe's song more than once. I ordered the CD off Amazon as soon as I heard it; not prior to knowing who'd won, which some seem to have done. I'm probably in a minority but I'd never heard the original, so I had no expection one way or another. I did download it, before the CD turned up, although that was only because I have a free 60 song download and years subscription to Napster, that came via my new laptop. It certainly wasn't done to bolster sales. I like RATM, and already have the album (and happen to think Killing is the worst song on it); there is no way I'd part with money to buy it again, just to prove a point. If the X-Factor had been won by Olly, I wouldn't have bought The Climb either, as I don't think it's suited to his voice. While I do watch X-Factor regularly, this is the first time I've ever bought a single (or album) since I started watching it. That's based purely on the fact I think Joe has an outstanding voice (and those who have called him "tuneless" are clearly tone deaf, as he is pitch perfect, whether you like him or not). My thoughts about him personally don't enter the equation. If the song had been rubbish, I wouldn't have bought it. I admit I do like Joe.. I think he seems like a genuinely nice, working class lad, with a great voice, and he's a superb role model for impressionable young kids. If my kids were under 10 still, I know which I'd rather have them singing along to! I'm as liberal as hell, but c'mon.. who can honestly say they would consider RATM to be child friendly or "Christmassy" whatever that may mean! |

![]() I thought it was a bit silly though releasing her version this week too, albeit on an album
