Some people are slating Rage Against the Machines track as not christmassy but neither was Girls Alouds 2002 one SOTU imo yet people didn't seem to blink an eye lid then.

What a silly post
I take it that you don't like Girls Aloud, as you've picked out one of the god-knows-how-many non-Christmassy number ones to have a pop at

Not really taking a pop at it, just pointing out that it wasn't Christmassy, and no one really complained about it. Jeez, you X-Factor fans need a break, thinking people are attacking bands when people are just pointing something out!

Back when Girls Aloud started, all this was very much a novelty. Nowadays, it's a bore. Cowell and co aren't even trying, they just assumed the Number 1 spot was theirs and didn't bother to come up with an original song. Just desserts I say.

Though I'm a HUGE GA fan and may seem biased, but I don't think SOTU is as 'different' as KITN, I do like the Rage song but I can see why people say the songs content isnt suited for Xmas No. 1. But Mad World made a great Xmas No 1 and if Bohemian Rhapsody was Xmas No 1 then its fine, I just think KITN is a bit too far to not be called controversial Xmas No 1 but the controversy is mostly about X Factor

A good post! 'Mad World' in itself is an excellent example of a Xmas No. 1 in more recent times that in my experience has been known to get people's backs up with regard to its suitability for a festive chart topper. I can recall getting an earbashing from relatives and friends because I had bought 'Mad World' and not either 'Christmastime (Don't Let The Bells End)' by The Darkness or 'Proper Crimbo' despite being a huge Bo Selecta fan at the time.

I agree with your points regarding 'Sound of the Underground' and think it is safe to say that 'Killing In The Name' falls far closer to the extreme fringes of music. I myself am delighted that there is still a glimmer of hope in an element of surprise regarding the charts.

That's correct. Only one (Band Aid) since 1990!

When was the last Christmassy number one?

Anyway, it doesn't matter. The point of the campaign was to at first to open things up so that in the future you at least have a chance of some Christmas number ones. You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Killing in the name of isn't a Christmas song, but then neither is hardly any Christmas number one. So it's not as though the RATM song deprived us of a good old Christmas song getting to number one.

Now the hard work is done you can have your Christmas song at number one next year. It's a bit much to expect to achieve everything in one go. One step at a time.

Very much thumbs up to what you say.I hope someone can come up with a genuine song that reflects the 'true' spirit of christmas or even revive a previously released track that does this. The only track that really does this is 'white christmas' by bing crosby really to me that is universally popular - but that track is so very much out of date now (I am not suggesting that track at all). The X-factor would not provide the proper platform for this however due to its commercial connitations - not the true spirit of christmas.

No & I don't see the point of bringing them either up either, they are yesterdays news.Move on everyone.
I do get the point really - you are trying to knock pop idols / x-factors most succesful exponents and neutralise a large part of their arguement. At least this RATM has tried to activate some of the x-factorites criminaly under used brain cells - it has got them thinking about why their complete devotion to the format is so dear to them & make them realise there are large faults associating themselves to such a pop / celebrity lead biasted show and allowing themselves to be manipulated by a $billion tycoon (can't wait to hear the - you are just jealous comments)

SOTU was basically the same as the X Factor songs in that it was from a reality show- though SOTU didn't have a key change or a rubbish choir bit. I quite like it, I quite like the current number 1 too, I wouldn't bother buying either though!

What complete devotion though? If every household that watched the final of X Factor bought a copy of Joes single RATM wouldn't have got close to the No1 spot.

People watch X Factor for fun, some vote many don't and when the single comes out those that like it buy it.

Nobody is being manipulated, it's a choice people make.

No it wasn't Christmassy, and there's no doubt that Popstars The Rivals helped it to no.1, but it was an undeniably brilliant original pop song - something X Factor is completely redundant of.
