A good post! 'Mad World' in itself is an excellent example of a Xmas No. 1 in more recent times that in my experience has been known to get people's backs up with regard to its suitability for a festive chart topper. I can recall getting an earbashing from relatives and friends because I had bought 'Mad World' and not either 'Christmastime (Don't Let The Bells End)' by The Darkness or 'Proper Crimbo' despite being a huge Bo Selecta fan at the time.
I agree with your points regarding 'Sound of the Underground' and think it is safe to say that 'Killing In The Name' falls far closer to the extreme fringes of music. I myself am delighted that there is still a glimmer of hope in an element of surprise regarding the charts.
